The Fiscal Impact of Immigration in the United States
ConclusionThe United States faces a considerable fiscal challenge with the explosive growth in government spending, the escalation of entitlement payments, and slower demographic growth. How immigrants impact the fiscal state of the U.S. government is important for policymakers and the public to consider when evaluating different reforms to get the U.S. government onto a sounder fiscal footing. Our paper “The Fiscal Impact of Immigration in the United States ” is the first in a new series of Cato papers that analyze the fiscal impact of immigration. It ’s 248 pages of information, data, explanations, figures, and cha...

George Selgin(This is the second installment of a three-part essay. The first part ishere.)Big Engines that Couldn ' tAlthough Hoover ' s Reconstruction Finance Corporation (RFC) was " more largely a banker ' s loan bank than anything else " (Ebersole 1933, 477), financial institutions were never the only firms eligible for its support. Railroads were an important exception from the start, though they were so mainly because financial institutions, commercial banks, and insurance companies especially, were railroads ' main investors. The New Deal and Recovery, Part 24: The RFC
George Selgin(In writing this series, I allowed myself to skip over some topics. But now that I ' m turning the series into a book, to be published by the University of Chicago Press, I have to close those gaps. The most important gap by far concerns the Reconstruction Finance Corporation (RFC). Although the RFC was originally established by Herbert Hoover, the Roosevelt administration not only allowed it to survive but turned it into the largest and most powerful of all New Deal agencies. Hence a three-part essay, of which this is the first installment.)Hoover ' s New DealThere are few more successful examples in history ...

Erec SmithRecently, the University of North Carolina voted to“ban” the requirement of politically charged prompts, like diversity statements, from any considerations for admission, hiring, promotion, and tenure. The following is a guest article by Suzanne Arroyo, Senior Content Strategist, and Christopher Ryan, Chief Strategy and Marketing Officer at Avionté. NHS staff survey 2022
NHS Employers -The annual survey, carried out in autumn 2022, covers staff in all 215 NHS trusts in England, across all roles. This year ’s results demonstrate staff discontent on pay which is reflected in a fall in staff feeling well rewarded. However, many top-level indicators have stabilised this year, staying broadly the same as in 2021. The results also find an improvement in staff perception of support for learning and develo pment and an increase in feelings around positive teamworking and support from line managers.Survey resultsNHS Employers - news (Source: Health Management Specialist Library)

Productivity of the English National Health Service: 2020/21 update
Centre for Health Economics -NHS productivity compares growth in health care outputs and inputs: the more outputs produced with a given amount of inputs, the higher the productivity growth. This assumes that more health care – such as operations in hospitals – generates more health for society. However this report finds that this assumption did not necessarily apply during the pandemic because hospitals were told to cancel as much non-emergency care as possible to free up acute beds and reduce the risk of Covid-19 i nfection. It also describes how, at the same time, the overall cost of the health care inputs – such a...

Quotations Missing from Bartlett ’s
David BoazOverat The Dispatch (ungatedhere) I have a critique of the latest edition ofBartlett ' s Familiar Quotations. As I say,Bartlett ' sis " the gold standard of quotations, the place anyone can go to confirm a quote and see the source. " But its editors " seem far more familiar with the words of liberal, leftist, and socialist sources than those of conservatives and libertarians. "Over the past 40 years, since the rise of Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, John Paul II, and even Deng Xiaoping, the world has seen a turn toward markets and economic freedom (albeit with a fall in 2020 during the pandemic lockdowns). But...
