Osteopathic Medical Schools Produce an Increasing Proportion of Family Medicine Residents
Am Fam Physician. 2024 Feb;109(2):114-115.ABSTRACTThe Association of American Medical Colleges reported a shortage of 45,000 primary care physicians in 2020 and projects shortages of 65,000 by 2025 and 104,900 by 2030.1 The shortage has been exacerbated by physician retirement due to the COVID-19 pandemic.2 The increasing deficit is partially because of the decline in medical students entering primary care specialties. Parallel Application to U.S. Psychiatry Residency Programs: Trends in Frequency and Differences by Applicant Group, 2009 –2021
ConclusionsParallel application to psychiatry residency appears to be a common practice, but has decreased in frequency. However, the mean numbers of applications submitted to each specialty in parallel application combination and among single-specialty applicants have increased. This practice appears to have a disproportionate impact on international and osteopathic applicants. Additional efforts are needed to develop evidence-based advising tools to reduce the number of residency applications submitted to psychiatry programs. (Source: Academic Psychiatry)

Value of Miller ’s Pyramid for Clinical Skills Assessment in the Evaluation of Competency for Nurse Practitioner Students
As nursing education transitions to a competency-based focus required by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing ’s Essentials: Core Competencies for Nursing Education, Miller’s Pyramid of Clinical Competence provides a beneficial framework for the development and validation of skills needed for competent practice. The purpose of this article is to provide examples of how Miller’s Pyramid can be applied to assess and develop nurse practitioner student competencies. Progressing from knowing, observing, and showing that one can perform a task and then doing the task fosters autonomous thinking and practice comp...

A broadened understanding of nursing leadership development and science mentorship can facilitate support for the next generation of Black nurse scientists. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) can serve as formative launch pads for nurse scientist development. However, the role of HBCUs and strategies for supporting robust educa...
