A Nation Under Pressure: The Public Health Consequences of Stress in America
Stephen E. Straus Distinguished Lecture in the Science of Complementary Therapies· Explore potential contributors to stress levels in America· Discuss the individual and population level health effects of chronic stress· Identify evidence-based strategies for managing chronic stress Stress levels are high in the United States. In a 2015 national survey, 24 percent of adults reported extreme stress, an increase from 18 percent just one year earlier. America ’ s Opioid Overdose Epidemic: What We Know and How Health Practitioners Can Help
NIDCR Clinical Research Fellowship Grand Rounds In the United States, the number of drug overdose and opioid-involved deaths has been on the rise, with more than 50 percent of drug overdoses resulting in a death that involved opioid use. Between 2000 and 2015, more than 500,000 people died as a result of drug overdoses, and opioid overdoses are responsible for an estimated 91 deaths everyday nationwide. This presentation will focus on the epidemiology and history of the opioid overdose epidemic, the CDC ’ s activities to address overdoses (including the CDC ’ s Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain), as we...

Cell transplants to treat the “disease” of chronic pain
NIH Director's Wednesday Afternoon Lecture Series Neuropathic pain arises, in part, from a nerve injury-induced loss of spinal cord GABAergic inhibitory controls. Here we asked whether the neurological consequences of peripheral nerve damage can be overcome by transplanting embryonic cortical GABAergic precursor cells into the spinal cord. Using electrophysiological, neuroanatomical and behavioral approaches, we found that the cells integrate into host spinal cord circuits and can ameliorate the persistent pain and itch associated with nerve damage. For more information go to https://oir.nih.gov/walsAir date: 5/18/2016 3:0...
