Roles within domestic environments in Chile: the food gatekeeper
CONCLUSIONS: in conclusion, the need to consider the distribution of roles in nutritional health interventions is emphasized, avoiding reproducing risky practices for health and quality of life of food gatekeepers, by overexerting them under the justification of effectiveness in the transmission of healthy habits to families.PMID:38501837 | DOI:10.20960/nh.04923 (Source: Nutricion Hospitalaria)

Attitudinal factors associated with protein sufficiency in Chilean vegan university students - A pilot study
CONCLUSION: there needs to be more protein adequacy in the assessed sample. Protein adequacy is associated with the length of time on the vegan diet, frequency of eating lunch away from home, and use of supplements regularly.PMID:38501809 | DOI:10.20960/nh.04878 (Source: Nutricion Hospitalaria)

Scientists in Antarctica track ‘baffling’ virus that could decimate penguins and other polar animals
A 23-meter-long sailboat set off last week from Argentina for Antarctica’s Weddell Sea with eight scientists, lots of cloacal swabs, and a genetic fingerprinting machine aboard. The Australis is headed for the southern continent’s teeming colonies of Adélie penguins, other seabirds, and marine mammals. The goal : to search for signs of a deadly virus that has nearly circled the world over the past 4 years, leaving behind a trail of devastated wildlife. Last month, Spanish researchers confirmed that H5N1, the highly pathogenic form of avian influenza, had finally turned up—as long ...

Genomic analysis in Chilean patients with suspected Rett syndrome: keep a broad differential diagnosis
This study allowed to reach a diagnosis in half of the participants. The diagnosis of RTT was confirmed in over a third of them, while others were found to have alternative neurodevelopmental disorders. Further evaluation is needed to identify the cause in those with negative or uncertain results. This information is useful for the patients, families, and clinicians to guide clinical management, even more so since the development of novel therapies for RTT. We also show the feasibility of implementing a step-wide approach to genomic testing in a setting with limited resources. (Source: Frontiers in Genetics)

Bycatch and pollution are the main threats for Burmeister's porpoises inhabiting a high-industrialized bay in the Humboldt current system
We report a dead Burmeister's porpoise positive for avian flu virus A (H5N1). Metals analyzed were found in muscle and skin tissues of stranded Burmeister's porpoises in the following order (Zn > Cu > Cr > As > Hg > Pb > Cd). Although we could not assess pollution as a cause of mortality, Cr, As and Pb concentrations exceeded the concentrations found in other porpoises species worldwide. We conclude that bycatch and pollution as the main threats for Burmeister's porpoise survival in northern Chile. Future studies should investigate the use of acoustic deterrent alarms to mitigate the bycatch in the bay an...

Robotic surgery across Latin America: a bibliometric analysis of research trends from 2009 to 2022
This study aimed to use bibliometric techniques to identify the research trends and patterns of robotic surgery in Latin America. The research strategy used the terms “Robotic,” “Surgery,” and the name of all the Latin American countries, in all fields and collections of Web of Science database. Only original articles published between 2009 and 2022 were included. The software Rayyan, Bibliometric in the R Studio, and VOSViewer were used to develop the an alyses. After screening, 96 articles were included from 60 different journals. There was a 22.51% annual increase in the scientific production of robotic surgery ...

Objective and subjective measures of air pollution and self-rated health: the evidence from Chile
ConclusionsOur findings add evidence that air pollution is a relevant determinant of SRH. In addition, they show that subjective measures of air pollution can be as reliable as physical measures in the analysis of the association between air pollution and human health. Intrinsic Motivation and Institutional Limitations: Key Implementation Determinants of Psychological First Aid Training
Community Ment Health J. 2024 Mar 15. doi: 10.1007/s10597-024-01261-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPsychological first aid (PFA) trainings are conducted to train frontline care workers in practical and emotional support to people who have been recently affected by stressful events. The aim of this study was to describe the determinants of the implementation behavior of a PFA training strategy in Chile and to provide theoretical information on the factors that influence trainers' self-efficacy. For this purpose, the Determinants of Implementation Behavior Questionnaire, administered online to a sample of 117 PFA trainers ...

Trends in vasectomy and sexually transmitted diseases in Chile: findings from robust national databases
Cad Saude Publica. 2024 Mar 11;40(3):e00129323. doi: 10.1590/0102-311XEN129323. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTA controversy about the increase or decline of vasectomy is emerging; however, the evidence is still scarce in Latin America. This ecological study analyzed the vasectomy and sexual transmitted diseases (STD) trends over a period of 10 years in Chile and determined if there is any relationship between them. We conducted a mixed ecological study using secondary and representative data on the number of vasectomies and STD cases from 2008 to 2017. Vasectomy rates were calculated for age-specific groups of men aged 20-59 ye...
