Sugars: Become an Expert Sugar Detective
The media has been full of articles about the massive amount of sugar that children and adults are consuming. Most of this added sugar consumed comes from sweetened beverages -- soft drinks, energy drinks, bottled green tea and ice tea, sweetened bottled water, and water with added vitamins. Special coffee drinks such as lattes, iced cappuccinos are full of sugar. Shocking Amounts of Sugar The American Heart Association (in a survey conducted between 2001-2004 -- Added Sugar in the Diet) concluded that on average, Americans were consuming 22 teaspoons of sugar per day.  I suspect that it is much higher today. A more rec...

One Good Reason To Stop Mocking Gluten-Free Diets
Going gluten-free is an ever-so-mockable decision, despite the fact that an estimated 18 million Americans suffer from some kind of gluten sensitivity that results in embarrassing and painful symptoms like gas, bloating, constipation and urgent diarrhea. Unlike celiac disease, which is an autoimmune disorder that damages the small intestines if gluten is present, there’s no blood test to confirm gluten sensitivity -- which contributes to even more skepticism about the condition. Gluten-free diets undertaken by people without celiac disease have been called the “new, cool eating disorder” or, more seriously, have bee...

Helping sweet cherries survive the long haul
Research into the effectiveness of hydrocooling of sweet cherries at commercial packing houses determined the need for post-packing cooling. Analyses determined that core temperatures achieved by in-line hydrocoolers during packing did not reduce temperatures sufficiently to ensure good quality retention over the longer periods of time required for container shipping to export markets. The study recommends forced-air cooling to further reduce sweet cherry temperatures in the box before shipping. (Source: ScienceDaily Headlines)

Montmorency tart cherry juice lowered blood uric acid levels and a marker for inflammation
(Weber Shandwick Worldwide) Tart cherries have long been researched for their association with pain relief -- from gout and arthritis pain to exercise-related muscle pain. A new study published in the Journal of Functional Foods reported consumption of Montmorency tart cherries caused changes in uric acid metabolism, which can have an impact on joint pain. The study also detected increases in specific anthocyanin compounds in the bloodstream after consuming tart cherries. (Source: EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health)

Cherry juice touted as treatment for gout
ConclusionThis small study found that drinking tart cherry juice twice a day temporarily lowered the blood uric acid levels of 12 young healthy volunteers without gout, up to eight hours after they consumed the drink. The levels began to increase back to the starting levels after 24-48 hours. The researchers and media extrapolated this finding to mean that the drink may be useful for gout, which is caused by an excess accumulation of uric acid crystals.Based on this study alone, we cannot say that drinking cherry juice helps prevent the onset of gout, or the recurrence of gout in those who have had it before. The study did...

Flying doctor bees to prevent cherry disease
A method to use bees to deliver disease control to cherry blossom, preventing brown rot in cherries, is being introduced by researchers. "Brown rot is caused by a fungus that significantly impacts the cherry industry through costs of applying fungicide, yield loss and fruit spoilage," says the project's leader and bee researcher.
