Why bladder cancer cells that shed their Y chromosome become more aggressive
In this episode:00:45 Why losing the Y chromosome makes bladder cancer more aggressiveLoss of the Y chromosome in bladder cancer cells is associated with increased severity of disease, but the reasons behind this have been unclear. Now researchers show that the loss of this chromosome helps tumour cells evade the immune system. However, this mechanism also makes the cells more vulnerable to certain chemotherapy treatments, and the researchers hope their findings could help improve outcomes for patients in the future.Research article: Abdel-Hafiz et al.07:30 Research HighlightsHow pollution particles ferry influenza virus d...

Which method of determining MGMT promoter methylation best predicts survival in people with glioblastoma treated with temozolomide?
In March 2021, the Cochrane Neuro-Oncology Group published a series of eight new systematic reviews on priority topics for the brain tumour community. These were selected from the most important unanswered questions identified by patients, the public and practitioners. In this podcast, Kathreena Kurian from the University of Bristol in the UK tells us about one of the reviews, which looked at the evidence on tests that might help to predict survival in patients who have received chemotherapy for glioblastoma. Prevention of blood clots in non-hospitalised cancer patients receiving chemotherapy
Alongside the hundreds of Cochrane Reviews of treatments for patients with cancer, there are many of ways to reduce the adverse effects of those treatments. In December 2020, we published the third update of one of these, looking at the effects of drugs to prevent venous thromboembolism in patients receiving chemotherapy. Marcello Di Nisio from the University "G. D'Annunzio" of Chieti-Pescara in Italy tells us about the latest findings in this podcast. (Source: Podcasts from The Cochrane Library)
