Career decision ‐making difficulties among career‐decided college students
AbstractThe procedures developed by Gati and colleagues to interpret scores in the Career Decision Difficulties Questionnaire were implemented to examine difficulties ’ profiles among self-identified decided college students who reported being either comfortable or uncomfortable with their career choice. Of the 583 participants, 92.5% were career decided and 7.5% were undecided. Close to half (47.2%) of the career-decided students self-identified as uncomfortab le with their career choice and reported similar career decision-making difficulties as their undecided peers. The most salient difficulties among decided uncomfo...

Career decision ‐making, career exploration behaviors, and self‐regulated learning
AbstractHelping individuals make a career decision is a key aim of career counseling. Determining how to encourage self-regulated learning and behaviors needed to achieve this goal often underlies career interventions. The English version of the Career Exploration Behavior survey (CEB-E) measures activities individuals engage in to learn about career options. The present study explored the psychometric properties of the CEB and its impact on various career outcomes. In the first study (N = 498), a good-fitting second-order factor model with four group-level scales and loadings was retained as the best model. In the secon...

School counseling practices related to postsecondary STEM participation
AbstractThis qualitative exploratory cross-case analysis analyzed the beliefs and practices of high school counselors related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) academic advisement, postsecondary planning, and career participation. Interviews were conducted with high school counselors (N = 13) who were purposively sampled to represent a diversity of schools in terms of demographic variables. Findings indicated that high school counselors perceived that (a) sociocultural factors influenced student preparation for STEM, career planning, and decision making; (b) students’ STEM-rel ated career goal...

Perceived Impact of Coronavirus Disease 2019 on Surgical Training: A Brazilian Survey
Recent studies revealed that coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) negatively impacted residency programs worldwide, particularly procedure-based programs. However, most studies are from high-income countries, with scarce data from low- and middle-income countries. Pandemic effects on surgical training were likely worse in strictly apprenticeship models relying heavily on surgical volume as opposed to competency-based programs. Notably, training programs in Brazil and other low- and middle-income countries follow these strict apprenticeship style frameworks. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Trajectories of Self-Control in Emerging Adulthood: Implications for Academic, Psychological, and Career Development among Chinese College Students
AbstractThis research examined the developmental trajectories of self-control in emerging adulthood and tested how the level and change of self-control contributed to academic, psychological, and career development among Chinese college students. Participants (N = 948; 64% female; Mage = 18.61 years at Wave 1) from eight Chinese public universities reported on their self-control through four waves of investigation from their first to third college year. Their college development outcomes in the academic, psychological, and career domains were assessed repeatedly at the third and fourth waves. Results showed that C...

Experts in Minimally Invasive Surgery are Outperformed by Trained Novices on Suturing Skills
Learning minimally invasive suturing can be challenging, creating a barrier to further implementation, especially with the development of easier methods. Nevertheless, mastering intracorporeal knot tying is crucial when alternative techniques prove inadequate. Therefore, the minimally invasive surgery (MIS) suturing skills of MIS experts are compared with a group of novices during their learning curve on a simulator. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

A Roadmap to Establishing Global Oncology as a Priority Initiative within a National Cancer Institute-Designated Cancer Center
J Natl Cancer Inst. 2023 Dec 7:djad255. doi: 10.1093/jnci/djad255. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAs the burden of cancers impacting low and middle-income countries (LMICs) is projected to increase, formation of strategic partnerships between institutions in high-income countries and LMIC institutions may serve to accelerate cancer research, clinical care, and training. As the United States (US) National Cancer Institute (NCI) and its Center for Global Health continue to encourage cancer centers to join its global mission, academic cancer centers in the US have increased their global activities. In 2015, the Helen Diller Fa...
