How to Get RSV Vaccines to Those Who Need Them Most
The world is entering a new era of vaccines. Following the success of COVID-19 mRNA shots, scientists have a far greater capacity to tailor shots to a virus’s structure, putting a host of new vaccines on the horizon. Morphologic features on sonography predict metastasis
Morphologic features of axillary nodes on sonography are reliable indicators in predicting metastasis, according to research published October 24 in Clinical Imaging. A team led by Anubha Wadhwa, MD, from Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee, WI, found that greater cortical thickness and the absence of a normal hilum had the highest positive predictive value (PPV) for metastatic disease. “Using clinical history in conjunction with imaging findings will help improve the accuracy of axillary nodal biopsies, especially for incidental nodes detected on screening,” the Wadhwa team wrote. Predicting axillary nodal status is ...

Nigeria: Leading the Way - Nigeria's Next Steps On the Path to Cervical Cancer Elimination
[Nigeria Health Watch] Each year, about 12,000 women in Nigeria are diagnosed with cervical cancer, more than half of whom will die. This is an avoidable tragedy for a disease that is preventable, detectable and treatable. As longtime cancer advocates, we hope these devastating numbers will soon dwindle. Yesterday, Nigeria introduced HPV vaccines into its national immunisation programme, taking a critical step towards eliminating the scourge of cervical cancer from our country. Can immunity from routine vaccines be used to fight cancer?
A University of Massachusetts Amherst team has demonstrated in theory that a protein antigen from a childhood vaccine can be delivered into the cells of a malignant tumor to refocus the body’s immune system against the cancer, effectively halting it and preventing its recurrence. The bacteria-based intracellular delivering (ID) system uses a non-toxic form of Salmonella that releases a drug, in this case a vaccine antigen, after it's inside a solid-tumor cancer cell.
