Reduced inhaler use is safe for infants with bronchiolitis
(Children's Hospital of Philadelphia) Bronchiolitis, a lung infection that is one of the most common reasons for hospitalizations in young children, is most prevalent during the winter months and is usually treated with albuterol delivered via inhalers, despite evidence showing no benefit in most patients. A multidisciplinary team of researchers from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) redesigned the hospital's standard treatment for the infection and reduced albuterol use without compromising care. What Causes Respiratory Failure?
Discussion The respiratory system is a complex system. The upper airways must remain patient. The lower airways must interface with the vascular system. The musculoskeletal system must provide mechanical function and the central nervous system must provide overall control. Respiratory failure occurs when the overall system cannot support the body’s necessarily ventilation, oxygenation or both. Children are at higher risk of respiratory failure. They have few intrinsic lung parenchyma problems, but have very small airways that increase the airflow resistance by themselves but then have to contend with problems such as...

Possible New Type Of Vaping-Related Illness Identified By Canadian Doctors
BOSTON (CBS) — There have been more than 2,000 cases of vaping-related lung injury in the U.S., but Canadian doctors may have identified another type of lung disease linked to vaping. Bronchiolitis obliterans is commonly referred to as “popcorn worker’s lung” because it has been seen in factory workers exposed to a chemical used to flavor microwave popcorn. Earlier this year, a 17-year-old male with a history of heavy vaping of flavored tobacco and THC products developed a cough, fever and shortness of breath. He was diagnosed with life-threatening lung failure, consistent with bronchiolitis obliterans. Scienti...

Smartphone App May Help Diagnose Child ’ s Cough
BOSTON (CBS) — When your child is coughing, it can be hard, even for a doctor, to distinguish between a cold or something more serious but researchers in Australia were able to reliably pinpoint the cause of a child’s cough using a smartphone app. Kids cough all the time, often from the common cold or seasonal allergies but sometimes it’s more serious like pneumonia. Kids may be misdiagnosed or treated unnecessarily with antibiotics or other medications because it’s often hard to tell what their coughing is about. Researchers were able to train speech recognition technology to recognize different co...
