Anti-Vaccination Activists To Blame For Bosnia's Measles Outbreak, Say Experts
SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina (AP) — Medical experts warned Friday the anti-vaccination lobby is growing in Bosnia, using scientifically discredited arguments to stoke parental fears in the worst-affected country in Europe's measles outbreak. This trend — combined with a generation that could not be immunized because of lack of vaccines during Bosnia's 1992-95 war — has led to 5,340 measles cases in Bosnia, according to the World Health Organization. "I am increasingly hearing from parents about their fears due to the stuff they read on the Internet," Dr. Gordana Banduka, a pediatrician from Pale, near Sarajevo, told...

Africa: Aid Under Fire - a Timeline of MSF's Withdrawal
[IRIN]Nairobi -Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has been among the highest risk-taking NGOs since it was founded in 1971, with its staff routinely putting their lives on the line in the midst of hostilities. In 1995, MSF ran the only hospital in Srebrenica, only being forced to withdraw once the Bosnian Serb Army entered the enclave. Yet sometimes they have to withdraw - either to protect their independence or security. (Source: AllAfrica News: Health and Medicine)

38 Things I've Learned to Let Go of in 38 Years
Last year, to celebrate another trip around the sun, I wrote a birthday blog called "37 Life Lessons in 37 Years." It was reminiscent of my life's biggest successes, "failures," learning experiences, and opportunities for growth condensed into little life-lesson nuggets. To my humble surprise, it went on to be my most popular blog ever, read by hundreds of thousands all over the world. (It was even translated into several other languages including German, Romanian, Spanish, Bosnian, and Russian.) Emails poured in from readers who felt a deep connection and resonance to those words. It spoke to the ability to connect deepl...

Microcredit doesn't live up to promise of transforming lives of the poor, 6 studies show
(Innovations for Poverty Action) Six studies, conducted independently in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ethiopia, India, Mexico, Mongolia, and Morocco, and released in the American Economic Journal: Applied Economics, followed over 37,000 individuals in total. The studies conclude that while microloans can increase small business ownership and investment, the small, short-term loans generally do not lead to increased income, investments in children's schooling, or substantial gains in women's empowerment for poor borrowers. It’s Still Raining in the Balkans, But Families Move Forward
This blog post was written by Wendy Brightman, a Red Cross volunteer who deployed to Bosnia and Herzegovina to assist with cash distribution to families recovering from heavy flooding that occurred last spring. When she arrived a few weeks ago, it was still raining. September rains have continued to bring flooding to the same areas along the swollen rivers. Mirad Fsakovic and his family live in Brcko District—in a two-story home that has been in their family for three generations. As we entered the gate to their garden, the smell of sweet peppers came to us. Mirad was roasting several pounds of them on a grill made from...
