Building Unity Farm - Creating a Brand
As we move from the farm building stage to the farm operations stage, Kathy and I are turning our attention to the basics of running our farming business.   We've filed articles of incorporation (Unity Farm LLC), created a formal land management plan for review by the town of Sherborn, built basic processes for recording income/expenses, documented options for selling our products and formulated a multi-year strategic plan leading to full recognition as an agricultural enterprise.Creating a brand is an important step for us as we begin to build awareness of our apples, honey, mushrooms, alpaca fiber, handmade soa...

Hepatitis A Infected Blueberries Sicken 113, Hepatitis A Vaccine Over 435 Adverse Reactions – Blueberries Recalled
Conclusion The beginning of this article shows the FDA and CDC removing a product, like blueberries, from the shelf when they determined it was infecting people and making them sick. You can also see that vaccines for the same virus – which are considered to be a pharmaceutical drug – harm many more children than blueberries and still these vaccines remain untouched. It’s my personal conviction the reason these organizations ignore adverse reactions is because pharmaceutical companies have firmly entrenched themselves within the US government, protecting their profits with laws. Is the risk of vaccinating your child ...

Building Unity Farm - The Year of Produce
I skipped my Unity Farm post last week due to the events in Boston that required undivided attention.2012 was the year of animals at Unity Farm since we acquired our herds and flocks from May to August of that year.   2013 will be the year of produce as we create the mushroom farm, orchard, and hoop house.Last weekend, after the Marathon related events subsided I finished cutting the 220 oak logs needed for the Spring inoculation of 11 types of Shitake and the 72 poplar logs needed for cultivating 6 types of Oyster mushrooms.Using 85% shade cloth, my wife and I built the 10x30 foot shade house pictured above. &nb...

More Standout Foods Take Center Stage
By Amy Campbell At a time when it seems like we're constantly being told what NOT to eat, it's refreshing to know that there are so many healthful, nutritious foods that are available for our enjoyment. So, without further ado, here are a few more for your consideration! Garlic. Garlic is one of those foods that people tend to either love or hate. Its other name is the "stinking rose," which is fitting, given its pungent smell and flavor. Garlic belongs to the same family as onions and leeks, and it's rich in sulfur-containing compounds called thiosulfinates, sulfoxides, and dithiins. Don't worry about what these are, let ...

Building Unity Farm - Creating the Orchard
In March, I wrote about our planning for the Unity Farm orchard.Just as with any IT project, we needed to create a charter (aims, success factors), a Gantt chart, project management, and a team structure to successfully "go live" with our orchard. Our charter is simple - use 1 acre of our 15 acres for fruit and and nut trees in support of self sufficiency and local fruit production.   Success will be clearing the weeds, vines, and shrubby trees that constitute young forest on the disturbed land below our pasture, which was likely cleared 20 years ago as part of the original grading of the land.   This section of f...

Building Unity Farm - Planting the Orchard
As Spring approaches, Kathy and I are diligently planning the fruits and vegetables of Unity farm. Our first year on the farm was about creating infrastructure and building the animal herds. Our second year will be about expanding the scope to include an extensive orchard, raised beds, a greenhouse, a hoop house/high tunnel, and mushroom farm. We're working with the town of Sherborn on an overall land management plan, respecting all wetland borders, setbacks, and regulations.   They town already approved the cutting of poplars for the mushroom farm. We've resurveyed the entire property and marked all wetland borders/b...

Almond flour, flax meal pancakes
This morning Christopher and Zoe wanted pancakes. My first thought was 'Damn. He knows I can't eat pancakes!' The flour shoots my blood sugar through the roof, the calories are totally empty and they put you in a food coma within an hour. So, I decided to make them the regular ones and make me some protein laden, low carb, grain free beauties. Cooking with almond flour is actually very easy when it comes to baked goods, you just sub out flour equally and off you go.For this recipe I used:1/3 cup almond flour1/4 cup golden flax meal1 egg1/2 cup of milk (to make these paleo or for dairy intolerance use coconut milk, almond m...

Building Unity Farm - Naming the Landscape
I'm a great admirer of Edwin Way Teale's Pulitzer prize winning work about his travels across the United States during the four seasons and about his last 20 years of life on an old farm in northeast Connecticut. I was recently asked to keynote a conference at the Mohegan Sun and took the road less traveled so that I could visit Teale's property, which is now an Audubon preserve.Trail Wood is very similar to Unity Farm -  We have woodland, meadow, wetland, streams, and pasture.     I've created about a mile of trails thus far and we're busy crafting place names like Forgot-me-not marsh, Bluebird meadow, and ...

Celebrate Heart Month With These Tasty Tips
Earlier this week I was on Let’s Talk Live in DC and WBAL in Baltimore sharing some easy and delicious ways you can eat your way to a healthy heart. No matter what time of day — breakfast, lunch, dinner or snacks — I shared foods that will keep your heart and belly happy all day long. You can watch both videos below, but check out below for a few highlights too. Tip #1: Go for Oats  Research has shown that consuming 3g/day of oat soluble fiber – as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol – may help reduce the risk of heart disease. “Perfect Portions” is a fabulous new inst...

Nurse Fuel.
Do you skip breakfast before a morning shift, or grab a slice of plain toast as it flies out of the toaster to munch on the drive in? Me, too. This often results in the mid-morning DONK when your energy falls to zero and you get the fine-motor colly-wobbles. Well, you know how to fix that don’t you. Here is my own favourite recipe for Bircher Muesli. A filling and nutritious Nurse Fuel that you can have hot in winter and cold in summer and only takes a few extra minutes to transfer to your tank. Bircher Muesli was first introduced in hospitals in the 1900’s by a Swiss physician Maximilian Bircher-Benner. It was based o...

A “Nutrition Prescription” For Fighting Cold and Flu
Medicine isn’t the only way to fight off cold and flu. Food can be your medicine too. I was on Let’s Talk Live recently sharing a nutrition prescription to help you stay healthy. Below are some highlights from the segment. There are basically two big tricks to beating winter “bugs”: reducing inflammation and boosting immunity.  So whether you’re trying to prevent sickness or recover ASAP, all the foods I mention below will help you. Spicy Lamb Korma I created this recipe for www.leanonlamb.com – it’s a spicy lamb korma that you make in the slow cooker. Lamb is nutrient rich, and packed ...

Thirty-Two/Thirty-Three.
Dear Birdy,I lost track of the days and the weeks, and I forgot to write you a letter at the 32 month mark.  Yes, I know you didn't realize it, and I'm pretty sure you didn't care (it's not like you slid me a note that said, "Hey, Maa.  Where's my blog letter, yo?"), but it's been bothering me, so this is a combination letter.  This is just one of the many things I've already screwed up in your little world, and I'm sure it's just one of the many things I will screw up.  So cheers!  I raise my cup of blueberries to you, my darling Bird, the very same blueberries you keep naming before you...

Reactive Oxygen Species Are Your Friends!
The line under James Watson's name reads, of course, "Co-discoverer of DNA. Nobel Prize". But it could also read "Provocateur", since he's been pretty good at that over the years. He seems to have the right personality for it - both The Double Helix (fancy new edition there) and its notorious follow-up volume Avoid Boring People illustrate the point. There are any number of people who've interacted with him over the years who can't stand the guy. But it would be a simpler world if everyone that we found hard to take was wrong about everything, wouldn't it? I bring this up because Watson has published an article, again del...
