Hemolysis question
I see LDH/haptoglobin ordered a lot in ICUs and was wondering how much of this is truly necessary. Does normal bilirubin pretty much rule out significant hemolysis or is there additional utility in ordering LDH/haptoglobin? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Question from EM - how do you differentiate liver disease vs hemolysis labs?
Hello IM friends, I am in EM and have a question that I think better fits your expertise. I've had several chronic alcoholic patients come in with a lab pattern of anemia, low platelets, and elevated bilirubin. I know this can be expected for some cirrhotics, but it is also the pattern that might prompt consideration of hemolysis/MAHA. What do you do in these situations to differentiate between the two? I'm sure that sending a full hemolysis panel and smear would help guide us, but we... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Does conjugated bilirubin cause jaundice too?
I understand unconjugated bilirubin can cause jaundice. Can conjugated bilirubin also jaundice? Much of the literature I'm finding simply states "bilirubin". Thanks for the help. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Bilirubin in the Neonate... (normal or alarming?)
OK so I have been confused on this for a while I have heard that a newborn should never be jaundiced... and yet I have heard that it is normal. Reading MTB2 it says this Transient Hyperbilirubinemia "Over 60% of all newborn infants are jaundiced. This is due to the infant's spleen removing RBCs carrying HgbF. This results in a physiological release of hemoglobin and in turn a rise in bilirubin" Then... Pathologic Jaundice in the Newborn... Bilirubin in the Neonate... (normal or alarming?)
