Retrospective study of the impact of diabetes on the severity and prognosis of COVID ‑19
Exp Ther Med. 2024 Mar 11;27(5):194. doi: 10.3892/etm.2024.12482. eCollection 2024 May.ABSTRACTPatients with diabetes coexisting with viral infection tend to have poor outcomes, but the association between diabetes and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) prognosis is controversial at present. The present study reviewed and analyzed the data of 1,892 patients with COVID-19 admitted to Shaanxi Provincial People's Hospital (Xi'an, China). Demographic, clinical, laboratory and treatment data as well as clinical outcomes were extracted from the electronic medical records and compared between patients with and without diabetes. ...

A refined prediction model for survival in hepatocellular carcinoma patients treated with transarterial chemoembolization
ConclusionThis newly developed TP scoring system has the potential to be a useful tool in identifying ideal candidates of TACE and predicting OS with favorable performance and discrimination. However, further external validation is needed to confirm its effectiveness. (Source: Frontiers in Oncology)

Safety and Feasibility of Combining On-Demand Selective Locoregional Treatment with First-Line Atezolizumab Plus Bevacizumab for Patients with Unresectable Hepatocellular Carcinoma
The objective response rate of the combination-therapy group (80.0%) was higher than that of the atezo/bev alone group (21.1%; p = 0.005). Progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were longer in the combination group (medians for PFS and OS not reached) than in the atezo/bev alone group (median PFS, 7.4 months; median OS, 19.8 months) (PFS, p = 0.004; OS, p < 0.001). The albumin-bilirubin score did not change, and no severe complications occurred after locoregional treatment. When performed in a minimally invasive manner, on-demand selective locoregional treatment combined with first-line atezo/bev coul...

Molecularly imprinted polymers for sensing/depleting human serum albumin (HSA): A critical review of recent advances and current challenges
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Mar 24:131132. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131132. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHuman serum albumin (HSA) is an essential biomacromolecule in the blood circulatory system because it carries numerous molecules, including fatty acids (FAs), bilirubin, metal ions, hormones, and different pharmaceuticals, and plays a significant role in regulating blood osmotic pressure. Fluctuations in HSA levels in human biofluids, particularly urine and serum, are associated with several disorders, such as elevated blood pressure, diabetes mellitus (DM), liver dysfunction, and a wide range of renal diseases. Thus...

Acute High-Output Heart Failure with Pulmonary Hypertension and Severe Liver Injury Caused by Amlodipine Poisoning: A Case Report
We report a 52-year-old woman who suffered from severe shock after an overdose of amlodipine. Hemodynamic monitoring showed that while her left ventricular systolic function and cardiac output were elevated, her systemic vascular resistance decreased significantly. At the same time, the size of her right heart, her central venous pressure, and the oxygen saturation of her central venous circulation all increased abnormally. The patient's circulatory function and right ventricular dysfunction gradually improved after large doses of vasopressors and detoxification measures. However, her bilirubin and transaminase levels incr...

The efficacy and safety of PD-1 inhibitor combined with TACE in the first-line treatment of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma
In this study, thre patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma were treated with PD-1 inhibitor combined with TACE to achieve good tumor reduction effect and underwent liver cancer resection surgery. For patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma, whether in BCLC stage B or stage C, effective systemic therapy (PD-1 inhibitor) combined with local therapy (TACE) can achieve a high rate of tumor regression and objective response. Some patients may even pursue surgical treatment opportunities, and the treatment-related adverse reactions are controllable, which is expected to provide new options for extending ...

Safety and compliance of long-term low-dose ondansetron in alcohol use disorder treatment
CONCLUSIONS: Low-dose AD04 has the potential to be a safe treatment option for subjects with AUD and ALD, indicating the need for an RCT for this specific cohort. Such a trial would pave the way for the design of a precision treatment for combined AUD with ALD.PMID:38521730 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejim.2024.03.017 (Source: European Journal of Internal Medicine)
