The Challenge of Superhydrophobicity: Environmentally Facilitated Cassie-Wenzel Transitions and Structural Design
Adv Sci (Weinh). 2023 Dec 25:e2305961. doi: 10.1002/advs.202305961. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSuperhydrophobic materials can be used in various fields to optimize production and life due to their unique surface wetting properties. However, under certain pressure and perturbation conditions, the droplets deposited on superhydrophobic materials are prone to change from Cassie state to Wenzel state, which limits the practical applications of the materials. In recent years, a large number of works have investigated the transition behavior, transition mechanism, and influencing factors of the wetting transition that occurs ...

Electrospun nanofiber membranes for rapid liver hemostasis via N-alkylated chitosan doped chitosan/PEO
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Dec 22:128948. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.128948. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe ideal hemostatic agents should be able to stop bleeding quickly and avoid secondary bleeding caused by adhesion with blood clots during dressing change. Herein, a hydrophobic electrospun nanofiber membrane was prepared for achieving hemostasis, rationally targeting both attributes, via doping N-alkylated chitosan (N-CS) grafted with octadecyl into chitosan/polyethylene oxide (PEO). In vitro and in vivo coagulation tests showed that CPNs doped with small amounts of N-CS (CPN31) could significantly shorten hemostas...

Spatiotemporal dynamics and modeling of thiacloprid in paddy multimedia systems with the effect of wetting-drying cycles
This study investigated the effects of water management practices on THI spatiotemporal dynamics in paddy multimedia systems by combining soil column experiments and a non-steady-state multimedia model. The results indicated the wetting-drying cycle (WDC) irrigation reduced THI occurrences in environmental phases (i.e., soil, interstitial water, and overlying water) and accelerated the THI loss through the THI aerobic degradation process. THI occurrences in the soil and water phases decreased from 18.8% for conventional flooding (CF) treatment to 9.2% for severe wetting-drying cycle (SW) treatment after 29 days, while the ...

A PEDF peptide mimetic effectively relieves dry eye in a diabetic murine model by restoring corneal nerve, barrier, and lacrimal gland function
CONCLUSION: The study demonstrates that topical application of a synthetic PEDF mimetic effectively alleviates diabetes-induced dry eye by restoring corneal sensitivity, tear secretion, and endothelial barrier and lacrimal gland function. These findings have significant implications for the potential treatment of dry eye using a cost-effective and reproducible approach with minimal invasiveness and no obvious side effects.PMID:38103731 | DOI:10.1016/j.jtos.2023.12.002 (Source: The Ocular Surface)

Fundamental Aspects and Relevance of Components in Antihistamine Eye Drops
J Investig Allergol Clin Immunol. 2023 Dec;33(6):431-438. doi: 10.18176/jiaci.0963.ABSTRACTOcular allergy covers a series of immune-allergic inflammatory diseases of the ocular surface, with different degrees of involvement and severity. These pathologies are caused by a variety of IgE- and non-IgE-mediated immune mechanisms and may involve all parts of the external eye, including the conjunctiva, cornea, eyelids, tear film, and commensal flora. The most frequent is allergic conjunctivitis, a condition with different clinical forms that are classified according to the degree of involvement and the presence or absence of pr...
