What ’s the best way to get rid of bed head? Episode 122
Does this bed head product really work? Sasha asks…Can Ma Cherie Perfect Shower fix your bed better than regular water? Is this worth the money or is it nothing more than water mixed with leave in conditioner? Let’s begin by talking about what causes bed head. First, you have to realize that there are two different kinds of bonds that control the shape of your hair. There are the disulfide bonds – these are very strong chemical bonds (kind of like the rungs of a ladder that keep the proteins in your hair locked in shape. These are very tough to break – think relaxer or straightening treatment. Then there...

A Meditation on Pain | Longreads Blog
It's happening, says the woman I love to someone in the other room. The someone is most likely her sister, and I hear the shuffle of clogs on the ruined carpet, the swish and swirl of her turquoise dress. I feel the shadow of her body in the doorway. I hear her breathing, tiny bursts of air through the nose and mouth. I feel and hear everything, but I am not a body. And because I am no longer a body, I do not register sound or voice. I do not register anything. Even my presence on the scratchy carpet. I do not know that I have been lying in the lap of the woman I love as she soothes my sweat-drenched hair, as she whispers ...

Electrospun Dissolvable Material to Make Tampons that Prevent HIV Infections
Two of the UW’s fibers (white) made of different ingredients are shown dissolving. When the materials come into contact with moisture, they rapidly hydrate and dissolve to form gels. The gel could then spread around the vagina during sex to deliver the drug. Topical antiviral gels have the capacity to kill the HIV virus within the vagina, and so allow a woman to protect herself, but they lack certain characteristics that would make them practical in the real world. One problem is that the gel has to deliver a high dose of the antiviral agent, which is essentially achieved by using a lot of gel – a potentially lea...

What to Know about Children’s Nighttime Bedwetting
Toilet training can be a stressful process. This is particularly the case for children who achieve daytime dryness but continue to wet themselves — and the bed — overnight. It may leave you wondering what’s normal and what you can do to help your child. Nighttime wetting is one of the most common urologic conditions in childhood. The vast majority of cases are not related to a physical cause. Most commonly, nighttime wetting happens in children who are very deep sleepers; their brains and bladders aren’t communicating as they should while they sleep. It is not your child’s fault. One of the most valuable...

Useful information about cosmetic chemistry
This article on cosmetic science is primarily intended to benefit anyone interested in chemist careers but hopefully the Beauty Brains community will find this information useful as well! Surfactants It is amazing how little time is devoted to surfactants in college when you consider the importance they play in so many industries. What are they? Surfactant is a shorter way to say “surface active agent”. These are molecules that have the property of reducing surface tension, thereby allowing oil and water to form stable (temporarily) mixtures. Examples – Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Glycol Distearat...

An Excellent Week For Autism Advocacy! Suzanne Wright Speaks Out and John Elder Robison Resigns
Thank You Suzanne Wright! It was a good week for reality based autism advocacy for two reasons. First, I was very encouraged by Suzanne Wright's very honest description of the many challenges facing persons with autism disorders and their families in Autism Speaks to Washington - A Call for Action. Second I was very pleased to see John Elder Robison, an extremely high functioning and very successful, free ranging Aspie, who refuses to acknowledge that autism is a disorder that should be cured, resign all his positions with Autism Speaks.  It appears that Autism Speaks may be abandoning its attempts to mollify the Neuro...

Drug Patch Treatment Takes New Strides
While drug discovery has taken major strides in the past few decades, drug delivery is still a relatively static field. The vast majority of pharmaceuticals can only be delivered orally or intravenously; in the hospital, this poses a problem with patients who are nauseous, unable to take medications by mouth, and/or who lack IV access. Drug patches are already a useful noninvasive way to deliver treatment like pain medication, but their applicability for other therapeutics has been limited. Now, as reported in the journal Advance Materials, bioengineers at the Virginia Tech-Wake Forest School of Biomedical Engingeering, ...

when your patient says thanks….
The other morning I was approached by a patient in the hospital foyer. She just wanted to say thanks for the care I had given her. Then out of left field she said, “and I love following your blog and Facebook page….but I must say I’m a bit disappointed you didn’t write anything about me. …..wasn’t I interesting enough?” Strangely enough, I have had this happen 3 times over the last month. Patients who recognised me from this blog or my Facebook page, which I do not deny feels sorta nice & elicits mucho self ego-stroking (which is not so nice, just ask my partner)….but it also underlines the care I must ...
