Interventions for renal vasculitis in adults
Renal vasculitis causes damage to the small blood vessels inside the kidneys and - when untreated - can lead to a rapid loss of kidney function. Therapies that block the immune system to switch off the vasculitis process are available but can lead to serious infections and other long-term complications. The Cochrane Review of treatments to induce and maintain disease remission for renal vasculitis was updated in January 2020 and we asked lead author, Giles Walters from Canberra Hospital in Australia to bring us up-to-date with the findings. Is plasma from people who have recovered from COVID-19 an effective treatment for people with COVID-19?
Cochrane is producing a series of reviews to help decision makers respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and is keeping these up to date as new evidence emerges. In October 2020, we published our second update of the review of convalescent plasma and hyperimmune immunoglobulin and we asked its lead author, Khai Li Chai from Monash University in Australia, to tell us about the latest findings. Economics for Drs - what you need to know to understand UBI and a jobs guarantee
As the economic fall out of covid-19 starts to bite, attention is turning to how the state can support everyone - especially if the pandemic turns into a depression. Universal basic income, and a jobs guarantee are two of the potential mechanisms a country could deploy, both with different effects on people's health and wellbeing. In this podcast, Martin Hensher, associate professor of health system financing and organisation at Deakin university in Australia , and author of the new analysis "Covid-19, unemployment, and health: time for deeper solutions?" joins us to get you up to speed on the economic thought behind th...

Wellbeing – The joy of socks
In Australia, a staggering 25% of doctors have had thoughts of suicide in the past 12 months, a recent survey said. Mental health problems are higher in medicine than any other job – and yet healthcare professionals are still stigmatised for seeking help. Partly in response to his own struggles, Geoff Toogood, a cardiologist in Melbourne, started an ingenious campaign called CrazySocks4Docs to highlight the issue.https://www.crazysocks4docs.com.au/ (Source: The BMJ Podcast)
