International students considering doing an MD degree in Australia
Hi all, I am an international student considering doing an MD degree in Australia. Understand that there has been an internship crisis for years and just want to know what are the chances for an international student getting a training spot in Australia. I have read that there was previously a commonwealth medical internship scheme that provides extra 100+ spots for internationals. But seems that the scheme has been replaced by "Junior Doctor Training Program - Private Hospital Stream"... How has coronavirus affected your University?
Hey, just curious how things are going on where you are. I'm studying at an Australian university and our schools med program has already cancelled all clinical days indefinitely at the hospital to follow the government's recommendations. However, the dental school is still just business as usual, even though we're at the same hospital. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Does Australia/New Zealand have any law that prevents foreign residency applicants from applying on the same ground?
Hello everyone! This is my first post on this site! I would like to ask you whether there is any restricting law like the RLMT (in the UK) present in Australia and/or New Zealand because of which foreign IMGs (non-citizens) are prevented to apply for residency/fellowship positions in the first... Acvim 2020
Hey everyone, Wondering if anyone is attending ACVIM this year? I will be attending and it will be my first time attending ACVIM and only my second conference in the US. I will be moving from Australia to San Francisco to start my internship in July and will pretty much be dropping my bags off and heading straight for the conference. Looking forward to it! Just starting to look into the accomodation options now, and what else I can explore on the weekend following the conference. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Beth Darnall, PhD, Says De-Prescribing Can Be Risky...
Life after opioids: 'We have not served our patients well' More than 3 million Australians are living with chronic pain, and the medical system is struggling to help them as it turns away from its reliance on opioids www.theguardian.com “You may have a patient that has been on a stable dose of opioids for 10 years, and then you start de-prescribing. We are now exposing them to new risks for opioid overdose, for suicidality, for actual suicide, for withdrawal symptoms, for increased pain.” People living in chronic pain are a highly mar...

FMG or IMG in Australia? Best path to take.
I've been accepted into a US MD school that'll cost me ~100-125k for 4 years. My fiance, however, wants to move back to Australia for a host of reasons and I honestly agree with him. I would love to live and practice in his home city (Melbourne) where I've stayed for an extended period of time over the years. For a better picture of our relationship, I am currently 29 and we've been together for almost 7 years. He has an opportunity offered that if he took would have to move back to... Pre -MD : Registered Hospital Pharmacist or Bachelor of Pharmaceutics and Therapeutic Science
I am currently a third year enrolled in a Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) at UQ in Australia. I have provisional entry into MD at UQ, which is a Postgraduate course only. I need to decide whether to do three years of pharmacy (exiting end of this year and graduating with a Bachelor of Pharmaceutics and Therapeutic Science) or to do the entire degree and internship year (5 years). If I do three years I'll be able to start earning a doctors wage two years earlier, and start making a family etc... What is "basic training" vs "advanced training" / how long does it take to become a pediatrician in Aus?
Hi Guys! I wanted to inquire about the difference between "basic training" vs "advanced training" & how that works in Australia? For example, I was interested in becoming a general pediatrician and according to RACP it takes 6 years -- 3 years of "basic training" & another 3 years of "advanced training": Paediatrics & Child Health However, is "advanced training" equivalent to what North America considers... US vs Australian Undergrad and then Medical Schools
Hi, First time posting--Kind of excited I am in a debate on whether to attend my undergrad in the USA then do my medical school in the States or do my undergrad(3 years) and medical school in Australia. I am a US citizen. Primary reasons of considering this are 1. cost: medical school costs might be similar in both countries but undergrad is cheaper in Australia even as an international. So overall it might be cheaper in Aus 2. Family is considering moving to Aus and already applied for... US vs Australian Undergrad and then Medical Schools (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Including the ischiorectal fossa in anal cancer - yay/nay?
Australians say always include all of it. American and British say do not include unless clear evidence of spread through levator and even then only some of it. What's the answer? Does anyone actually follow the Australian advice and include the whole thing for every anal case? Doing something inbetween (giving more margin on muscle)? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Surgical Exam (GSSE) Study
Hi, I am a medical resident in Australia and am hoping to pursue a career in general surgery. I would like to ask for any advice with regards to studying for the Primary Surgical exam (GSSE) which now appears to be a pre-requisite before applying to a RACS training program. I have found a great online resource for the anatomy component, www.primaryanatomy.com, and am currently working my way through their question bank and mock exams along with... Questions About Rehab Medicine/PM & R and Primary Care Sports Medicine in Australia?
Just wondering what the specialties are like and the pathway/schooling required, as well as other details like lifestyle, workload, types of patients, etc. Really any information would be great. When researching myself I primarily find information on North American PM&R instead of rehab medicine and I'm not sure if the two are directly comparable? I know the RACP Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine says they've adapted their general outline of the specialty from the American...
