When you can see your baby on the vaginal ultrasound scan, you are going to be very excited , because you are one step closer to your dream of having your own baby. However, the truth is that not every pregnancy results in a baby - and this is as true of IVF pregnancies as bedroom pregnancies. About 15% of all pregnancies will miscarry, and IVF does not reduce the risk of a miscarriage. These are usually first trimester miscarriages. Sometimes we can see the baby, but can't see a heartbeat. Please don't panic ! This is quite normal when the scan is done early, because the baby is very small, and it takes time for the h...

Unnecessary D & C after a miscarriage can reduce your fertility
It's not uncommon for women who get pregnant after IVF to have a miscarriage. After all, the miscarriage rate is about 15% in all pregnancies, and IVF does not protect against a miscarriage. While this can cause a lot of heartache, doctors often add insult to injury by suggesting that patients do a D&C ( dilatation and curettage) to surgically evacuate the pregnancy. The loss is far more acute, because this is such a deeply desired pregnancy . A miscarriage can often be the last straw which breaks the camel' s back , and many patients will give up after this. This is a shame, because the fact that you have got pregnant ...

When not to do IVF
Most infertile patients know that IVF is the treatment option which maximizes their chances of getting pregnant .However, the problem seems to be that the pendulum has swung in the other direction , and lots of patients are being advised to do IVF, even though they do not need it. The truth is that there are many simpler treatment options available to treat infertility, and not every infertile couple needs IVF !Thus, young patients with PCOD can easily be treated with medicines for ovulation induction. This is much less expensive than doing IVF – and it’s much more fun making babies in the bedroom than going to an IVF ...

Asherman syndrome-HSG
A 25 year old lady being investigated for  infertility with history of previous D&C. The HSG shows grossly reduced capacity of the uterus with incapability to inject more than 10 cc contrast with no evidence of reflux. In addition it shows multiple mixed opacities with longitudinal radio lucencies interspersed with opacities, along with beaded and tortuous tubular component on the right  possibly representing the right tube. The left tube has not been visualized. There is no peritoneal spill. The features suggest adhesions and fibrotic endometrium, representing Asherman syndrome. Case submitted by Dr MGK Murt...
