A single story
Tom and I watch very little television...at least not what's offered by regular broadcasting. Instead, we subscribe to Netflix streaming which allows us to pick and choose our programming sans commercials. Last night we wanted something brief and so chose an 18-minute TEDTalk titled "The Danger of a Single Story" presented by the storyteller and author, Chimamanda Adichie.  It's the first talk in a compilation called "On Life's Lessons & Confessions" Adichie, referring to herself as a "chocolate skinned" Eastern Nigerian, opens by telling how as a very young reader (around age two to four) all she read were Britis...

Feeling versus Being
Here’s a mistaken belief I hear all the time from clients and Food and Feelings message board members: Because I feel a certain way, it must be true. I feel fat, I feel unlovable, I feel unsuccessful, I feel inadequate, I feel defective. Hello, feeling isn’t being. I’m all for connecting with emotions and skillfully using them to navigate life, but when you say I’m feeling any of the above, what does that really mean? Do the preceding statements equal I am fat, I am unlovable, I am unsuccessful, I am inadequate, I am defective? Because that’s what you’re telling yourself. Where’s the proof? When pe...

Connecting the 5-Year Journey to Discovering You
Photo credit Lyssa Vang [Today's guest post is by my good friend and co-host of The Shut Up Show, Berni Xiong. As The Shin Kicking Life Spark, Berni helps solopreneurs spark people and spark movements.] It’s hard to believe I almost let myself whittle away to nothing nearly five years ago. Literally. Two weeks after I kicked my corporate sales job to the curb and started my first entrepreneurial venture in coaching, I got sick with a mystery diagnosis. I was hospitalized for seven days. Unable to work on building the new business. Uninsured. Unemployed. On top of that, I was forced into involuntary anorexia by four docto...

Your Wounded Spirit
Symptoms of a Wounded Spirituality The relationship within our ‘self’ of body, mind and emotions shapes our ability to relate to other people, and to the spiritual power in the universe. Depression, addictions, compulsive behaviour and low self-esteem are but symptoms, signs of a broken relationship within our ‘self’. They are symptoms of a ‘wounded spirit’. When this connection between our body, mind and emotions is broken, our ability, our ‘response-ability’, to respond healthily to life’s circumstances is limited. In recovery our task is to identify and undo the broken parts of ourselves and learn to r...

Harvard Student Chances for Johns Hopkins Med
by Brady Kinesia (Posted Sun May 26, 2013 4:50 am)I just wanted to know if my stats are good enough to be competitive. I am not whining, nothing. I am just honestly worried.Statistics-wise, the answer is yes, that it's good enough to be "competitive" at almost all schools. But the stats are not the part that you should worry about There were depression issues, found out I had ADHD, coupled with the fact that I was a recovering anorexic There is sort of an issue in that you may be asked to explain why you took a year off from college, and, all things considered, they would probably rather see someone who went straight throu...

Link feast
In case you missed them - 10 of the best psychology links from the past week: 1. Love this - "Neuroscience may be sexier than psychology right now, and it certainly has a lot more money and celebrity. But they really cannot get along without each other." Alison Gopnik in the Wall Street Journal. 2. New Scientist has started a new column written by people with "mysterious neurological conditions". The first is by Heather Sellers who has a severe form of prosopagnosia (AKA face blindness). 3. There's been lots of coverage this last week about NIMH director Thomas R. “We Should Reopen It.” BC Conservative Party Leader John Cummins on the Closed BC Adult ADHD Clinic
“We Should Reopen It.” BC Conservative Party Leader John Cummins on the Closed BC Adult ADHD ClinicPost from: Adult ADD Strengths 6 Years ago in 2007, the BC Liberal government under then health minister George Abbott shut down the only provincial adult ADHD clinic in BC at Children’s Hospital in Vancouver after a 12-14 month long wait list for an entire year. In May 2011 I asked Christy Clark during her by election campaign at her town hall meeting if she would re open the BC adult ADHD clinic. She said “I don’t have enough information about the specifics of the program that you’re talking about, ...

Can We Stamp Out Thinspiration on Twitter? Torri Singer Thinks We Can
Pro-anorexia (or “pro-ana”) groups have been around online for over a decade, and we first discussed them here five years ago. More recently, with the rise of social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest, these groups have found a new life. Often associated with the label “thinspiration,” these groups elevate the idea of being thin to a virtual religion. People who are all about thinspiration engage in disordered eating in order to be as thin as possible — a common symptom of anorexia. But they don’t see it as a disorder or a problem, making this an insidious problem. Noneth...
