An interview with Rosi Sexton: polymath
Jump to follow-up On Sunday 23 September, we recorded an interview with Rosi Sexton. Ever since I got to know her, I’ve been impressed by her polymathy. She’s a musician, a mathematician and a champion athlete, and now an osteopath: certainly an unusual combination. You can read about her on her Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosi_Sexton. The video is long and wide-ranging, so I’ll give some bookmarks, in case you don’t want to watch it all. (And please excuse my garish London marathon track suit.) Rosi recently started to take piano lessons again, after a 20 year break. She plays Chopin in the int...

When Western medicine fails patients and clinicians
It ’s a common scenario: a patient shows up to my office lugging a bagful of over-the-counter supplements, defiantly informing me that they “don’t believe in prescription drugs.” In the very next breath, they present a lab slip with a list of bloodwork that their alternative medicine doctor wan ts me to order to help diagnose their […]Find jobs at  Careers by KevinMD.com.  Search thousands of physician, PA, NP, and CRNA jobs now.  Learn more. What Makes Cliffside Better
Our Approach Cliffside Malibu is a world class luxury drug and alcohol treatment center. We want you to recover for good, and we do that with seven major factors. 1. We Stand By Our Commitment To Your Success. Our main goal is: We only want you to come to treatment once. 2. We Recognize The Root Cause Of Addiction As Pain/Trauma. Most treatment programs are based on the 12 Step Model. While 12 Step programs have largely been the go-to way to recover from addiction for over 75 years, the model does not address the underlying causes of addiction. While we use 12 Steps as an adjunct to other forms of therapy, we work to help ...

Cliffside Malibu Approach vs AA Approach
What is the Cliffside Malibu approach? Cliffside Malibu has a evidence-based, well thought out three-fold approach to addiction treatment that creates the foundation for lasting recovery that is different from AA. When all three are used together, the outcomes are more effective than any individual part on its own. Those three approaches are: Intensive one-on-one psychotherapy using the Stages of Change model. Complement intensive therapy with carefully chosen, evidence-based holistic treatments. We employ the first two tools together to create changes in the brain consistent with the ways neuroscience research suggests...

Kratom: harmless herbal supplement or dangerous drug?
What is it? Kratom is a powdered herbal supplement derived from the leaves of a tropical evergreen tree that is native to Southeast Asia and is usually taken orally but can also be brewed into teas. At low doses the drug acts similar to a stimulant; however, at higher doses more like an opioid.   Continue reading ... Your patients are rating you online: How to respond. Manage your online ...

EMR Integration Paying Dividends For All Types of Healthcare Practitioners
The following is a guest blog post from the team at Fullscript, a proud sponsor of Healthcare Scene. Follow and engage with them on Twitter: @FullscriptHQ It would not be a stretch to say that EMRs have been both a blessing and curse for healthcare practitioners. There is no doubt that EMRs have improved the safety of care and the mountain of data that has been collected is now powering the renaissance of Artificial Intelligence in healthcare. However, EMRs have also increased the workload on clinicians which in turn has negatively impacted the overall patient experience and has contributed to burnout. It would not be a ...

3D-Printed Casts and Splints. Interview with Diana Hall, COO of ActivArmor
ActivArmor, based in Colorado, offers a range of 3D-printed casts and splints. The customized casts are breathable and water-proof, and can be made to either be fixed in place, or removable, as required. The company reports that patients wearing the new casts can complete a greater range of activities during their recovery, including swimming. How to Use Yoga Therapy for Anxiety
Anxiety can stymie our lives in so many ways. Whether it’s a debilitating panic attack, constant worry or an all pervading fear, anxiety is often an unwanted companion that seemingly only wants the worst for us. However with the right help, guidance and support, there are a variety of techniques that can help. Of course it’s important to note that we’re all different, and what works for one person may not be as effective on another, but from personal experience, my own road to recovery led me, thankfully, to yoga therapy. After years of struggling with depression and anxiety, I moved to to South East Asia and embarke...
