Last psych appt
Originally posted on Behind the Façade: Yesterday afternoon I was seen by the doctors, and my community nurse/case manager also sat in on the meeting. I was asked whether I wanted to be discharged that day or the next, I chose to be discharged that afternoon. Though I still wasn’t great, I at least felt a little better than when I came in and I guess there wasn’t much point in staying any longer. We also discussed my medication, I still remain on 200mg of Pristiq and 50mg of Seroquel XR but have also commenced on 450mg of lithium as a mood stabiliser. It was either lithium or sodium valproate, but according to the doc...

Healthcare Update Satellite — 06-23-2014
The right to carry a concealed weapon only exists if your doctor says so. Many states are requiring that physicians certify whether patients are competent to carry a concealed weapon. Some states require mandatory reporting of those deemed not competent to carry a concealed weapon. Of course, the natural extension of such laws is that if the doctors make an inappropriate determination, then the doctors can be held liable if the certifiee does something inappropriate with the weapon. This New England Journal of Medicine article shows that many doctors aren’t comfortable making that determination. Then again, I’v...

The Real Fallout From Breast Cancer Treatment? My Hair
My surgeon told me that the first question women ask after a breast cancer diagnosis is, “Will I lose my hair?” followed by “Will I lose my breasts?” Seldom is the first question “Will I lose my life?” I thought this was odd until I lost my hair the first time I had chemotherapy almost 10 years ago – then I got it – being bald is miserable, especially for the vain at heart – like me! Two weeks after the first chemotherapy treatment all those years ago I was standing in a store making a purchase when I ran my fingers through my hair and my hand came out with a clump of bright blond hair. I quickly stuc...

Can science banish baldness?
It may not be a cure for cancer, but science is getting close to banishing baldness. Here’s a quick summary of recent research on hair regrowth. The 3D Spheroid Solution A joint program between the University of Durham and Columbia University Medical Centre has found a new way to grow new hairs from tissue samples. Historically this has been tricky because when the cells are grown in the lab they tend to produce more skin instead of hair fibers. But the team figured out that by clumping the cells into “3D spheroids” they could increase the number of hairs produced. Problem yet to be solved: how to prevent...

Anabolic Steroids like Trenbolone
In the last few decades, the focus of a big majority of athletes has shifted towards performance enhancing drugs such as anabolic steroids. The fact that these bodybuilding steroids or anabolic androgenic steroids can dramatically improve the level of on-field performance, strength, muscle mass, and endurance means that there is every reason that athletes admire these drugs. Different athletes make use of different anabolic steroids for a wide range of purposes. While some use steroids to run faster and become more agile than ever, some use these potent drugs to hit harder and stay ahead of the competition, while others us...

To solve a beauty problem would you join a new drug clinical trial?
I’ll be totally honest: most of the press releases I get are boring crap about the newest flavor of lip balm or something equally banal. But occasionally I do see something that catches my eye. Case in point, this website from Healthline that allows you to search for clinical trials in your area for a specific medical condition. What does this have to do with beauty science, you ask? I played around with the search function a little bit and was surprised to find how many new drug trials are underway for medical conditions that would also solve beauty problems. For example, I found tests for scaly skin medication, an...

We asked a few of our loyal fans to “test drive” the Forum by posting a question. As luck would have it,  after Lindy and a few others asked their questions, the data base became corrupted befo...
