How plants interact with beneficial microbes in the soil
(University of Massachusetts at Amherst) A team of molecular biologists led by Dong Wang at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, working with the alfalfa-clover Medicago truncatula, has found how a gene in the host plant encodes a protein that recognizes the cell membrane surrounding the symbiotic bacteria, then directs other proteins to harvest the nutrients. Details appear online in the January edition of Nature Plants. (Source: EurekAlert! - Biology)

How to Pass a Urine Drug Test Using Science
This article originally appeared on Inverse. By Yasmin Tayag Drug testing, like heroin, got popular in the late '80s and early '90s. As Reagan's Drug War rushed towards its logical conclusion, employers hustled to create drug-free work environments despite a lack of evidence that there was any advantage in it or that tests actually worked. Now, as the legalization movement gains momentum, tests to screen for marijuana use seem outrageous, but they remain relatively common. Plenty of businesses still require a piss test and plenty of would-be employees still struggle to pass. There are cleanses and adulterants that pro...

Efficient, Antibiotic Marker-Free Transformation of a Dicot and a Monocot Crop with Glutamate 1-Semialdehyde Aminotransferase Selectable Marker Genes
Antibiotic-free, efficient in vitro selection in plant genetic engineering can improve risk perception and speed up pre-market scrutiny of genetically modified crops. We provide a protocol for genetic transformation of two important crops, durum wheat and alfalfa, using a bacterial and a plant-derived selectable marker gene encoding mutated, gabaculine-insensitive glutamate 1-semialdehyde aminotransferase (GSA) enzymes. These methods can potentially be applied, with minor adaptations, to many other monocot and dicot crop plants. (Source: Springer protocols feed by Plant Sciences)

Spiders Inspire Fear -- Along With Novel Products That Could Change The World
Spiders, or at least caricatures of them, are out in full force this Halloween weekend. But next time you see the eight-legged creature carved into a pumpkin, or dropping from the ceiling of a haunted house, perhaps consider feeling more than just spooked. A little respect is also appropriate. Arachnids, as they're scientifically known, could soon help you stay safer, warmer and healthier. "They're not here to scare us," said Cheryl Hayashi, professor and vice chair of biology at University of California, Riverside. "There is lots of stuff we can learn from them." She and other scientists are discovering not only what spi...
