The New Deal and Recovery, Part 24: The RFC
George Selgin(In writing this series, I allowed myself to skip over some topics. But now that I ' m turning the series into a book, to be published by the University of Chicago Press, I have to close those gaps. The most important gap by far concerns the Reconstruction Finance Corporation (RFC). Although the RFC was originally established by Herbert Hoover, the Roosevelt administration not only allowed it to survive but turned it into the largest and most powerful of all New Deal agencies. Hence a three-part essay, of which this is the first installment.)Hoover ' s New DealThere are few more successful examples in history ...

What fools these mortals be . . .
Here is Lake Powell, one of the two major reservoirs on the Colorado River, in 2017 and 2022 -- just a span of five years. (Image from NASA.) For some reason Lake Mead has gotten more attention, but it ' s happening to both of them.  The compact that allocates Colorado River water among the states was signed 100 years ago, and it allocated 20.3 billion cubic meters per year. But today, the total annual flow of the river is 15.1 billion cubic meters. The population of the Southwest therefore depends on billions of cubic meters of water every year that don ' t exist, for its cities and its agriculture. Oh, an...

Collecting Memories
Instead of thinking of life as a series of goals or accomplishments, I also like to think of life as a collection of memories. I ponder what kinds of memories I’d like to add to that collection as I age. This helps me get past overly abstract goals and focus on the experiential nature of life. Sometimes achieving a goal is a great experience, but sometimes it can be a boring slog where only the end result matters. If we pay more attention to the experiences we’re accumulating and not just the achievements we’re ticking off, we can acquire better memories and feel more enjoyment from those memories. ...

Phytonutrients: Paint your plate with the colors of the rainbow
Did you know that adding color to your meals will help you live a longer, healthier life? Colorful fruits and vegetables can paint a beautiful picture of health because they contain phytonutrients, compounds that give plants their rich colors as well as their distinctive tastes and aromas. Phytonutrients also strengthen a plant’s immune system. They protect the plant from threats in their natural environment such as disease and excessive sun. When humans eat plant foods, phytonutrients protect us from chronic diseases. Phytonutrients have potent anti-cancer and anti-heart disease effects. And epidemiological research sug...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, October 29th 2018
This study shows that some genetic changes linked to cancer are present in surprisingly large numbers of normal cells. We still have a long way to go to fully understand the implications of these new findings, but as cancer researchers, we can't underestimate the importance of studying healthy tissue." Early Onset of Menopause Correlates with Shorter Life Expectancy https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2018/10/early-onset-of-menopause-correlates-with-shorter-life-expectancy/ Aging is a phenomenon affecting all organs and systems throughout the body, driven by rising levels of molecular damage. The varia...

Proposing a Better Approach to the Discovery of Calorie Restriction Mimetics
This study aims to develop a medium throughput screening methodology by conducting mitochondrial function assays on C. elegans exposed to various compounds using an Extracellular Flux Analyzer. By periodically introducing pharmacological agents such as electron transport chain inhibitors to manipulate mitochondrial activity and respiratory function, the mitochondrial biology of C. elegans can be examined to establish a correlation between oxygen consumption rates, CR mimetics, and lifespan extension. Here, we show that by establishing a combinatorial biosynthetic route in Escherichia coli and exploring the substrate...

Food items we should avoid “ like the plague ” …
I just read a very interesting interview with/article about a food poisoning lawyer (imagine that…!!!) who shares his knowledge about food, potentially contaminated food. And some of it isn’t so obvious. That is why I’m posting the link to the article, as a warning/reminder to those of us who have weakened immune systems: goo.gl/NG3oty I never buy prepackaged (washed? Hah!) salad, e.g., or anything that has been cut and washed by others. I never go near salad bars, no matter how clean the restaurant looks. Bacteria bacteria bacteria! Better be safe than sorry… After my SMM diagnosis, I began growin...

Isagenix. – Diet Review
Conclusion – Does Isagenix Work? Isagenix Isalean’s shake is marketed well, but it’s loaded with sugar and calories. There’s also a lot of protein added, but once you research what kinds of ingredients are included, you realize it’s not a quality meal replacement. The protein added is cheap and can be found for a reduced price elsewhere. Many customers have also complained about the taste, lack of weight loss, and the hard to drink consistency. There are better options which have only 1 gram of sugar, no added fructose, only high quality whey protein, and great reviews to back up their weight loss claims.  T...

Have a methyl with your viral RNA
Chemical modification of RNA by the addition of methyl groups is known to alter gene expression without changing the nucleotide sequence. The addition of a methyl group to adenosine has been found to regulate gene expression of animal viruses, and most recently of plant viruses. The illustration shows a methyl (CH3-) group added to the sixth nitrogen of the purine base adenine. The entire molecule, with the ribose, is called N6-methyladenosine (m6A). The m6A modification is found in multiple RNAs of most eukaryotes. It has also been found in the genome of RNA animal viruses. The modification is added to RNAs by a multi-pro...

Recommended Probiotics for Kids
Promoting healthy, diverse gut bacteria appears able to make a big difference in keeping us healthy. That’s why I often recommend probiotics for the kids in my pediatric practice. This is especially true after a course of antibiotics. Many parents are confused by the wide array of probiotics available and ask for my recommendations. There are several nice options. I suggest trying one and observing changes in y0ur child’s digestive health. If you don’t see the desired result (either stool that is too loose or continued constipation), try a different brand. Brands of Recommended Probiotics for Kids Garden of ...
