Welcome to Pride Month!

Pride Month is celebrated each year in the month of June to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan. The Stonewall Uprising was a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. To learn more about Pride Month, read the Library of Congress article on this topic. People who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA+) are members of every community. Students, patrons, staff, health care providers, parents, and more identify as LGBTQIA+. LGBTQIA+ individuals, or Sexual and Gender Minorities, face many barriers in accessing healthcare, including discrimination, lack of access, misunderstanding, and fear. Consequently, many LGBTQIA+ individuals do not regularly access appropriate and timely care. The more informed healthcare professionals are, the more LGBTQI+ patients and clients will become more comfortable in an environment that is often alienating, disrespectful, and even traumatic. With today’s post, we share some general resources to help improve the health and wellness of LGBTQIA+ people in our communities. This is the first of several posts for Pride Month highlighting LGBTQIA+ health resources.
