Children with Autism and Potential Developmental Coordination Disorder: Results from a Literature Review to Inform the Diagnosis Process

AbstractPurpose of Review.Children with autism who present with motor difficulties may now be given a diagnosis of developmental coordination disorder (DCD) when they meet DCD diagnostic criteria. However, determining whether the motor deficits present in some autistic children are related to DCD, or to autism alone, may be challenging. Our goal was to synthesize recommendations from the literature regarding when to seek a DCD diagnosis in autistic children. We conducted a systematic review of articles published between 2013 and 2019. To be eligible, studies needed to differentiate groups of autistic children with and without DCD, or compare autism with DCD or provide specific recommendations on seeking a DCD diagnosis in autistic children presenting with motor difficulties.Recent FindingsAmong the 507 records identified, 11 studies were included. Most studies compared clinical presentations of autism and DCD, but few recommendations were found that would guide health professionals in seeking a diagnosis of DCD. Some authors recommended providing a diagnosis when DCD criteria were met while others were more nuanced in their approach.SummaryMotor difficulties are common in autistic children. However, no consensus currently exists regarding clinical recommendations for situations when autistic children present with motor difficulties beyond those expected for the disorder. More research is needed to inform guidelines regarding seeking a DCD diagnosis in autistic children that c...
