Pain medication beliefs mediate the relationship between pain catastrophizing and opioid prescription use in patients with chronic non-cancer pain

worldwide29. Use of opioid therapy for CNCP management has increased over the past decade in high income countries3. This is despite prescription opioids having modest effects on CNCP and clinical guidelines cautioning against their use1,8,48. Use of prescription opioids carries risk of significant harms, including adverse side effects, non-prescribed use, and opioid-related mortality2,9,28,66. Opioid dose escalation is common among long-term users25,32 and can also result in increased risk of opioid use disorders, significant disability, mortality and costs6,23,42.
