Comparing cancer and cardiovascular disease trends in 20 middle- or high-income countries 2000 –19: A pointer to national trajectories towards achieving Sustainable Development goal target 3.4

Twenty years have passed since governments adopted the UN Political Declaration on Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and committed to action to combat premature mortality from NCDs. Cardiovascular diseases (CVD), cancer, diabetes and chronic lung disease dominate the premature mortality landscape. These and all other NCDs have been estimated to be responsible for over three-quarters (77.0%) of the 20.4 million deaths at ages 30 to 70 worldwide in 2019 [1], and the burden is expected to rise over the next decades as populations ’ age, communicable diseases are progressively controlled, and the prevalence of key risk factors for NCDs increases.
