Presentation of the Julius M. Friedenwald Medal to Michael Camilleri, MD, AGAF

In 1913, Dr Julius Friedenwald, a professor of medicine at the Baltimore College of Physicians and Surgeons (later to become part of the University of Maryland) wrote the definitive 890 page textbook on Diet and Health and dedicated the book to Sir William Osler, FRS FRCP, a Canadian physician and one of the four founding professors of Johns Hopkins Hospital. Much of the book concentrated on the physiology of digestion and the application of diet recommendations to gastrointestinal disorders. Clearly, Dr Friedenwald ’s prescience had Dr Michael Camilleri in mind as a future winner of his namesake award.
