Warning signals of elevated prediabetes prevalence in the modern Iranian urban population
According to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO), about 422 million people the world over suffer from diabetes mellitus (DM), with Eastern Mediterranean countries accounting for the highest prevalence (43 million people) [1]. DM is among the 10 highest lethal diseases worldwide and caused 1.6 million deaths in 2016 [1]. DM significantly leads to cardiovascular complications, which are the main reasons for morbidity and mortality; consequently, 52% of deaths in Type 2 DM are attributed to cardiovascular mortality [2].
