Misperceptions and management of risk: Ongoing challenges in women's cardiovascular health

That women experience relative protection from cardiovascular disease (CVD) during the premenopausal years compared with men or postmenopausal women is well established. However, CVD risk increases following the menopausal transition, and CVD remains the leading cause of mortality for both women and men [1]. Traditional risk factors such as dyslipidemia, hypertension, diabetes, and obesity, whilst all risk factors that can occur at any time in a woman's lifespan, become more prevalent after the menopausal transition [2].
