Outcomes in resected ampullary cancer: Difficult decision-making in an uncommon heterogeneous malignancy

The prognostication and management of ampullary cancer continues to be a challenge for multidisciplinary oncology teams. Ampullary cancer is relatively rare and somewhat heterogeneous in histology and biology. Resection is the primary treatment modality with tumors often presenting at smaller size than pancreatic adenocarcinoma although the majority still have node positive disease (stage III). Fortunately, ampullary cancers have higher resection rates and higher 5 year overall survival rates compared to pancreas adenocarcinoma.
