Cost-benefit analysis of surgical approaches for cervical spondylotic myelopathy

The World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS) Spine Committee has recently recommended a cost-benefit analysis be conducted on different surgical approaches for cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) [1]. Therefore, the article by Goh et al. [2], newly published online in The Spine Journal (July 28, 2020) and entitled “Laminoplasty versus laminectomy and fusion for cervical spondylotic myelopathy” is a pioneering study of significant value. However, in this study, patient neurological status assessments before and after surgery are not analyzed using various outcome measures including the Japanese Orthopaedic Association scale (JOA), the visual analogue scale (VAS), and Nurick scale; leaving the analysis entirely focused on cost calculations.
