Sunday Sermonette: Yahweh ' s Greatest Hits

Deuteronomy 6 is extremely important -- in fact central -- to Jewish religious observance, and contains some of the most quoted lines in the Bible, including one that is quoted by Jesus in two of the gospels. At the same time, it contains its fair share of depravity. This is still the RSV. Here goes. 6 “Now this is the commandment, the statutes and the ordinances which theLord your God commanded me to teach you, that you may do them in the land to which you are going over, to possess it;2 that you may fear theLord your God, you and your son and your son ’s son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life; and that your days may be prolonged.3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and be careful to do them; that it may go well with you, and that you may multiply greatly, as theLord, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey.4 “Hear, O Israel: TheLord our God is oneLord;[a]This begins " Shema Yisrael " in Hebrew, which is the title of a prayer that is the centerpiece of daily prayer services and begins with this line. Children are taught to say it when they go to bed at night, and it is often people ' s last words. " The Lord " here translates YHWH.
