A Case of Paradoxical Coil Embolism through a Patent Foramen Ovale

A patent foramen ovale (PFO) is currently considered to be the most common conduit for a paradoxical embolism (1). An iatrogenic paradoxical embolism can be a life-threatening complication of intravascular procedures. Typically, iatrogenic emboli can be induced by medical devices that result in the formation of air emboli or by the disruption of inserted therapeutic materials. Iatrogenic emboli can pose serious complications, including end-organ damage, particularly of the brain and heart, which are the first organs to be supplied by the arterial circulation and most vulnerable to ischemia.
