Insulin resistance, diabetes and Parkinson's disease: The match continues

It is still a matter of debate whether diabetes increases the risk for Parkinson's disease (PD). Altogether, prospective cohort studies suggest an increased risk, while case-control studies have found the opposite [1,2]. Having said this, PD patients with concomitant diabetes show more severe disease and more rapid disease progression [3 –5]. At the same time, epidemiological studies have reported a reduced incidence of PD in diabetes patients receiving dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors or thiazolidinediones for their diabetes [6,7].
