ConclusionCompared with euthyroid status, hypothyroid status has an independent predicting value for adverse cardiovascular events in AMI patients. Further investigations are required to illustrate whether treatment of thyroid dysfunction could improve the prognosis of AMI patients.

AbstractObjectivesThe aim of this cross-sectional study was to compare oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of patients with left ventricular assist device (LVAD) and heart failure (HF).Material and methodsSeventy-four patients with LVAD were recruited from University Department for Cardiac Surgery, Leipzig Heart Center, Germany. A group of 72 patients with HF was composed by matching (age, gender, smoking). The German short form of oral health impact profile (OHIP G14) was applied. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) was measured by short form 36 survey (SF-36). Dental conditions (decayed-, missing- and filled-...

AbstractRheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients have almost twice the risk of heart failure (HF) of patients without RA, even when adjusting for presence of ischemic heart disease. Moreover, RA patients remain at two-fold higher risk of mortality from HF compared to non-RA patients. These observations suggest that RA specific inflammatory pathways are significant contributors to this increased risk of HF. We summarize the epidemiology of HF in RA patients, the differences in myocardial structure or function between RA vs non-RA patients without clinical signs of HF, and data on the role of systemic and local inflammation in RA ...

AbstractAimsAlthough physical activity (PA) and exercise are essential for patients with heart failure (HF), adherence to the recommended guidelines is low. Not much is known about the mediating effect of HF patients' mental state with their readiness for PA and reported activity levels. The purpose of this study is to investigate the mediatory effect of depression on PA readiness (physical limitation and psychological readiness) and self-reported PA in patients with HF.Methods and resultsIn this cross-sectional study, 163 New York Heart Association Class I and II HF patients, during their clinic visit, reported on their p...

Conclusions: PDE1i enhances contractility by a PKA-dependent increase in Cav1.2 conductance with less total [Ca2+]i increase, and no significant changes in SR [Ca2+], myofilament Ca2+-sensitivity, or phosphorylation of critical EC-coupling proteins as observed with b-ARs and/or PDE3i. PDE1i could provide a novel positive inotropic therapy for heart failure without the toxicities of b-ARs and PDE3i.PMID:34521216 | DOI:10.1161/CIRCRESAHA.121.319828

AbstractThe improvement in left ventricular assist device (LVAD) technology and scarcity of donor hearts have increased dramatically the population of the LVAD-supported patients and the probability of those patients to present to the emergency department with expected and non-expected device-related and patient –device interaction complications. The ageing of the LVAD-supported patients, mainly those supported with the ‘destination therapy’ indication, increases the risk for those patients to suffer from other co-morbidities common in the older population. In this second part of the trilogy on the ma nag...

Considerable evidence documents the effectiveness and efficacy of bariatric surgery (BaS) in reducing the prevalence and severity of obesity-related comorbidities. Diastolic heart failure (DHF) is a condition with considerable morbidity and mortality, yet recalcitrant to medical-therapy. Our objectives were to assess whether BaS is associated with a decrease in hospital admissions for DHF; and further assess its impact upon DHF hospital admissions among patients with hypertension (HTN) and coronary artery disease (CAD).
