Delineation of whole heart and substructures in thoracic radiation therapy: National guidelines and contouring atlas by the danish multidisciplinary cancer groups
Radiotherapy (RT) is widely used in the adjuvant and curative treatment of thoracic cancers such as mediastinal lymphoma, breast, lung and esophageal cancer, to improve overall survival. However, thoracic RT may cause incidental RT dose to the heart with a subsequent risk of radiation associated heart disease [1 –3]. For both breast cancer and Hodgkin lymphoma patients, a linear dose-response relationship between mean heart dose (MHD) and the risk of heart disease has been demonstrated [4–6].
