Vitamin D status and response to growth hormone treatment in prepubertal children with growth hormone deficiency

AbstractPurposeTo analyze whether vitamin D deficiency could condition the growth response to GH therapy, as well as to analyze if GH treatment modifies both seasonal variations and vitamin D levels in these patients.MethodsRetrospective study in 98 prepubertal children with GH deficiency (GHD), aged 4.1 –8.9 years treated with GH. Growth rate and blood testing (calcium, phosphorus, IGF-I, 25(0H)D and PTH) were monitored at diagnostic and every six months until 24 months of treatment. A control group was recruited (247 healthy children, aged 3.8–9.7 years). The criteria of the US Endocrine So ciety were used for the definition of hypovitaminosis D.ResultsThere were no significant differences in vitamin D deficiency among control (12.5%) and GHD groups (15.3%) before starting treatment. Growth rate and IGF-1 and PTH increased (p

CONCLUSION: The matrix effect caused by exogenous and endogenous interferences in the blood could be a hidden factor increasing the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency by causing falsely low 25OHD3 values. Suspicious results should be remeasured by a dilution study. PMID: 32496995 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

VITAMIN D deficiency symptoms can be difficult to spot because they don't necessarily make you feel unwell. But you could be at risk of a deficiency, and should consider eating more vitamin D-rich foods, if you develop this subtle pain in your bones.

We present a case of severe vitD deficiency-osteomalacia after gastric bypass operation for morbid obesity, treated with ergocalciferol intramuscularly. A 45-year-old woman was presented with hip pain and muscle weakness, which led ultimately to immobilization in a wheelchair. Fifteen years ago, she underwent roux-en-Y gastric by-pass for morbid obesity. Occasionally, she was treated with multivitamin supplements. On admission, iron deficiency anaemia, vitD deficiency (25OHD: 3.7 ng/ml) and secondary hyperparathyroidism were revealed. Bone turnover markers (BTM) were elevated. Radiological evaluation demonstrated insuffici...

Authors: Mahmoudzadeh H, Nikibakhsh AA, Pashapour S, Ghasemnejad-Berenji M Abstract BACKGROUND: A link between vitamin D deficiency and susceptibility to bacterial and viral infections has recently been suggested. AIM: To investigate a possible association between vitamin D deficiency and urinary tract infection (UTI). METHODS: A case-control study was undertaken comprising 75 children aged 2-7 years with UTI (cases) compared with 75 healthy controls in terms of serum 25 hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels. Serum 25(OH)D levels were measured using a chemiluminescence assay. For cases, dimercaptosuccinic ...

This study is to evaluate the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among pregnant women in Shanghai, China and to analyze the association of vitamin D status with some pregnancy outcomes (gestational diabetes and low birth weight).MethodsA total of 34,417 pregnant women in Shanghai were included in this study from January 2014 to December 2017, and the serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations were measured at 16th week of gestation by electrochemiluminescence assay. Seventy five grams of glucose was used to conduct oral glucose tolerance test during 24-28th week of gestational in all enrolled persons and the birth ...
