Cost-Effectiveness of Radiation Therapy by High-Volume Versus Low-Volume Radiation Oncologists for Head and Neck Cancer

Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) administered by high-volume radiation oncologists (ROs) provides a survival benefit for patients with head and neck cancers (HNC) compared to treatment by low-volume ROs. However, geographic proximity is often a factor in choosing providers. Additional costs can be associated with relocating to a higher-volume center, but may be worthwhile with respect to treatment outcomes. Our objective was to determine the cost-effectiveness of IMRT by low- versus high-volume ROs for patients with HNC.
