Structural and gamma-ray attenuation coefficients of different OAD films for nuclear medicine applications

This study aims to investigate the gamma and neutron attenuation properties of several OAD (oral anti-diabetic drugs) samples. Our sample consists of seven different OAD films with different elemental compositions. The data were evaluated with Monte Carlo (MATLAB, WinX) techniques by SEM (Scanning electron microscopy) and EDS (Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy) analysis. By using WinXCOM in the energy range from 0.02 MeV to 20 MeV, the mass attenuation coefficients (μ/ρ) for OAD samples are calculated. Additionally, both effective removal cross-section and effective atomic numbers (Zeff) for the sample films are investigated in the energy range from 0.02 MeV to 20 MeV. By using the μ/ρ, the Tenth-value-layer (TVL), the Half-value-layer (HVL), and Mean-free-path (MFP) values are also computed. The investigation reveals that the N5 sample having the highest Zeff and the highest MAC values is better in terms of gamma-ray shielding. It can be concluded that chemical structure of additive materials is strongly related with the radiation attenuation properties of OAD samples. Moreover, the effective removal cross section (ΣR) of investigated OAD samples have been calculated. The N7 has the highest (ΣR) value as a most effective OAD sample among the other samples for fast neutron shielding.

Background and objective: The maternal glucose-insulin axis is central for metabolic adaptations required for a healthy pregnancy. Metabolic changes in obese mothers in early pregnancy have been scantly described. Here we characterized the glucose-insulin axis in the first trimester of human pregnancy and assessed the effect of maternal obesity and fat mass. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, maternal blood samples (N = 323) were collected during voluntary pregnancy termination (gestational age 4+0–11+6 weeks) after overnight fasting. Smokers (N = 198) were identified by self-report and serum cotinine levels (ELI...

ConclusionTo the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of pyopneumothorax secondary toS. constellatus to be treated with linezolid. Pyopneumothorax may be caused by streptococcal infection, and linezolid is another good choice for treatment.

Authors: McCleary EE, Rainchuso L, Vineyard J, Giblin-Scanlon L Abstract Purpose: Depression is a rising global health concern manifesting bidirectional relationships between chronic disease conditions such as type 2 diabetes and oral health. The purpose of this study was to explore the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of oral health care professionals towards individuals with depression. Methods: A 24-item, validated Knowledge Attitudes and Practices (KAP) survey was used for this descriptive, cross-sectional study. Non-probability, convenience and snowball sampling was used to recruit oral health care professio...

The major part of the population with type 2 diabetes in the Scandinavian countries (Sweden, Denmark, Norway) is managed in primary care. Many are diagnosed and followed for a length of time in primary care, and only the fraction that develops diabetic complications or treatment-resistant hyperglycemia are typically referred to secondary and tertiary centers for specialist treatment.

In this issue of the Journal, a group of distinguished Nordic researchers, led by Anne Helene Garde and including four of our Associated Editors, present a discussion paper that originated from a workshop and provides detailed recommendations on night shift work (1). The recommendations are very clear: to protect workers ’ health, night shift schedules should have: (i) ≤3 consecutive night shifts; (ii) shift intervals of ≥11 hours; and (iii) ≤9 hours shift duration. For pregnant women, night work should be limited to one shift per week. The authors acknowledge that under circumstances allowing better possibi...

Abstract Understanding of the structural changes during their aggregation and interaction is a prerequisite for establishing the precise clinical relevance of human islet amyloid polypeptide (hIAPP) (involved in Type-II Diabetes Mellitus) in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease stemmed from beta-amyloid (Aβ). Herein, we show that the steady-state emission spectra obtained from photoluminescence (PL) simultaneously capture both the tyrosine derivative (tyrosinate) and the structure-specific intrinsic fluorescence during the aggregation of Aβ and hIAPP. We observe multiple peaks in the emission spectra whi...

CONCLUSION: OVX plus STZ induced more serious bone impairment than OVX alone, which involves the IGF-1R/β-catenin signaling axis in the pathogenesis. This may provide a potential target for treatment of postmenopausal diabetic osteoporosis. PMID: 33000666 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
