Commentary: The Great Divide
There is mounting evidence that social determinants of health, such as education, socioeconomic status, race and ethnicity, sex and gender, age, geographic location, English language proficiency, housing, access to healthy food, and exposure to neighborhood violence, have marked influence on several health-related outcomes. 1, 2 In the current issue of Seminars in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Asokan and colleagues 3 present the experience of an inner-city hospital delivering care to esophageal cancer patients.
