Asthmatic children and MDI verbal inhalation technique counseling

In this study many children younger than 18 years old with asthma were collected from University hospital outpatient clinics throughout two years period Their MDI inhalation technique was checked and the number of MDI inhalation technique mistakes were detected and corrected at the first visit and every month for two more visits (three visits). Their peak expiratory flow (PEF) and forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) as a percentage of the forced vital capacity (FVC) were checked at every visit.Results81 asthmatic subjects (54 female) younger than 18 years old were collected with a mean (SD) age 14.4 (1.8) years old. Most of the patients' owned MDI contained salbutamol, however, some patients were using Beclometasone MDI or Beclometasone and salbutamol combination MDI. The mean number of correct steps performed was significantly increased (p

This study was carried out on 59 subjects, 16 patients with mild persistent asthma,11 patients with moderate persistent asthma, 13 patients with severe persistent asthma, and 19 age and gender matched healthy controls. The HVEM mRNA expressions of all subjects were determined by real time PCR. Correlations between HVEM mRNA expression and fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), pulmonary function test values, total blood white cell count and differential, total immunoglobulin E (IgE) level, and Asthma Control Test (ACT) score were analyzed respectively. The discrimination abilities of HVEM mRNA between different groups wer...

This study aimed at assessing asthma control test (ACT score), quality of life (QOL), and pulmonary functions in asthmatic children, and to see the correlations between ACT score, QOL, and pulmonary functions. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the departments of pediatrics and physiology, College of Medicine, King Saud University Medical City (KSUMC), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. A total of 109 (53 asthmatics and 56 controls) children (aged 6 to 13 years) of both genders were studied. All subjects underwent clinical evaluation, 36-Item Short Form Survey (SF-36) for QOL, Spirometry, and cognitiv...

AbstractIt is well known that tobacco smoking worsens asthma. Conversely, few data are currently available in the literature on the effects of vaping in asthmatic patients. This work aims to investigate the effects of vaping on asthmatic patients and in asthmatic patients that switched from tobacco smoking to electronic cigarette (e-cig), in particular focusing on quality of life, asthma control, and pulmonary function. We designed a two-group study. One group encompassed vapers with asthma selected through a web survey with questions on quality of life and symptoms worsening; the other group encompassed vapers that switch...

CONCLUSION: Racial differences persisted in this cohort through age 10 years. Future studies should include potentially important, but rarely studied factors such as segregation and structural racism as these factors could explain the observed racial differences. es MA Abstract BACKGROUND: The assessment of airway function in preschool children can be done using simple measurement techniques such as interrupter resistance (Rint) or specific airway resistance (sRaw). OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to assess the relationship and the agreement between Rint and sRaw baseline measurements expressed in z-score and Bronchodilator Response (BDR) in accordance with the latest reference equations and recommended procedures. METHODS: One hundred thirty children aged 3 to 6 years old, referred to our Pediatric Pulmonary Function Test unit for assessment of airway functi...

AbstractIntroductionWhy do only some of patients who are prescribed angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE ‐I) develop cough? The pathogenesis of ACE‐I‐induced cough remains controversial and requires further studies.ObjectiveWe aim to investigate whether asthma is a contributing cause of ACE ‐I‐induced cough.MethodsPatients attending a cardiology clinic between March 2016 and March 2017 who were diagnosed with ACE ‐I induced cough were included in this study. ACE‐I‐induced cough was defined as cough which developed within four weeks after initiation of ACE‐I therapy and which improved within four ...

AbstractObjectivesRituximab (RTX) treatment is used for antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA) –associated vasculitis, but its benefits in eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) are unclear. Our aim was to characterize asthma control and glucocorticoid (GC) sparing after RTX treatment.MethodsA retrospective, computer-assisted search was performed to identify patients with EGPA and GC-dependent asthma diagnosed between 2000 and 2017 who received RTX for remission induction. Demographic and clinical features were analyzed.ResultsOf the 17 patients included, the majority were myeloperoxidase-ANCA posit...
