Swept-source optical coherence tomographic observation on prevalence and variations of cemento-enamel junction morphology

AbstractTo investigate the prevalence of different patterns of cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) morphology under swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). One hundred extracted human teeth were used consisting of incisors, premolars, and molars. Each sample was observed for every 500  μm circumferentially along CEJ and OCT images of the pattern were noted. Microscopic observations were done for the representative sample using confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The OCT images exhibited four CEJ patterns: edge-to-edge (type I), exposed dentin (type II), cementum overlapping enamel (type III), and enamel overlapping cementum (type IV). The prevalence of CEJ patterns was further statistically considered for mesial, distal, buccal, and lingual surfaces. The real-time imaging by SS-OCT instantly determined CEJ morphology. CLSM and TEM observation revealed morphological features along CEJ, which corresponded to OCT images of CEJ anatomy. OCT results showed 56.8% of type I pattern predominantly found on proximal surfaces, followed by 36.5% of type II pattern on buccal and lingual surface, 6.4% of type III pattern, and 0.3% of type IV pattern. There was a significant difference in prevalence of CEJ patterns among different types of teeth, but there was no statistically significant difference among the four surfaces in each type of teeth. OCT is a non-invasive diagnostic tool to examine the CEJ patterns along the entir e...

The objective of this study to determine the correlation between Hounsfield unit (HU) measurements from the C4 vertebral body and dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) T-score. Summary of Background Data: Recent attention has turned to the utilization of HU measurements from computed tomography (CT) as a potential screening method for low bone mineral density (BMD). We hypothesized that cervical spine CT HU measurements will correlate with BMD measurements conducted with DXA scans of the femoral neck. Material and Methods: Patients with cervical CT and femoral neck DXA scans at 1 institution were included in the stu...

AbstractAimPositron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) can detect cranial and large vessel inflammation in giant cell arteritis (GCA). We aimed to determine the change and significance of vascular activity at diagnosis and 6  months.MethodNewly diagnosed GCA patients underwent time ‐of‐flight fluorine‐18‐fluoro‐2‐deoxyglucose PET/CT from vertex to diaphragm within 72 hours of commencing corticosteroids and were followed for 12 months. A 6 months scan was performed in patients with inflammatory features on biopsy or CT aortitis. Vascular uptake was visually grade d by 2 blinded ...

ConclusionDual Tracer technique with Tc‐99m pertechnetate and Tc ‐99m tetrofosmin could be helpful in selecting nodules need surgical intervention. This technique can be used for convenient and rapid diagnostic evaluation of thyroid nodules non‐invasively. We suggest a combination of fine needle aspiration biopsy and dual use of Tc‐99m ‐pertechnetate and Tc‐99m‐tetrofosmin as a routine diagnostic approach to thyroid nodules.

ABSTRACT Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of anterior chamber depth and axial length on clinical performance of the Spot Vision Screener in detecting amblyopia risk factors in children aged 3-10 years. Methods: A total of 300 eyes from 150 patients aged 3-10 years were prospectively tested with Spot Vision Screener (firmware version, software version and a standard autorefractometer (Nidek ARK-1). The anterior chamber depth and axial length were measured with an optical biometer (Nidek AL-Scan). The sensitivity and specificity values for detecting significant refractive errors ...
