Yoga Helps Breast Cancer Survivors Get Better Sleep

 A  recent report on a study showing that yoga helps breast cancer survivors get better sleep may change my mind on the practice. I have attempted yoga a few times in my life and each time I come away thinking it was OK, but it didn’t do anything for me. If I am going to be active, I like to do something a little more intense like skiing, mountain biking or kayaking. As much as I enjoy these activities however, I love my sleep even more!   The study was conducted by Karen Mustian a researcher at the University of Rochester Medical Center. It revealed that cancer survivors, most of them from breast cancer reported a better quality of sleep, less fatigue and a reduction in sleep aids. Half of the 410 participants performed 75 minutes of yoga throughout the week while the other half did not. Those that practiced yoga reduced their use of sleep aids by 21 percent and reported less daytime sleepiness. Groundbreaking research when you think of how the daily functioning of survivors can be impacted by simply introducing yoga. If yoga helps breast cancer survivors get better sleep, I may become a believer. Sleep is my secret weapon. I have always slept well and have little trouble falling or staying asleep. When my women friends opine their lack of quality sleep after menopause, I quietly stay out of the conversation. It is never welcome to chime in about how well I sleep.
