NH Investigating Rare Case Of Degenerative Brain Disease

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services says it’s investigating one case of a rare, degenerative brain disease in the state. A news conference explaining the case of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease has been scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday at Catholic Medical Center in Manchester. Officials from the Manchester Public Health Department also will be present. Health officials say most reported cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease happen spontaneously, when an agent causes proteins in the brain to fold incorrectly. Some cases involve a genetic mutation that is passed down among families, according to the Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease foundation. The disease causes behavior changes, memory loss, falling down and other impaired coordination. Copyright 2013 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
