The promotion of policy changes restricting access to codeine medicines on Twitter: what do national pain organizations say?

Widespread use of opioids has contributed to what has been called an “opioid epidemic”.26,41,49,64,66 Codeine is one of the most commonly used opioid analgesics globally for treating mild to moderate pain.65 In Australia, codeine has remained the dominant opioid medicine that has been dispensed over the past 25 years.24,38,39 It is one of the most widely availabl e opioids, accessible without prescription (over-the-counter; OTC) in a number of countries (e.g., United Kingdom, New Zealand).30,67
