Protocol Navigation Training: Submitting and Accessing Phenotype and Molecular Data from NCBI ’ s dbGaP Archive

Protocol Navigation Training Program Seminar Series The NIH Intramural Research Program ’ s Protocol Navigation Training Program presents: ubmitting and Accessing Phenotype and Molecular Data from NCBI ’ s dbGaP Archive. This presentation will feature Michael Feolo, Staff Scientist and dbGaP Team Lead with the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), National Library of Medicine (NLM). Mr. Feolo will discuss the NCBI ’ s database of Genotypes and Phenotypes (dbGaP), an NIH-sponsored data repository charged with archiving, curating, and distributing information produced by studies investigating the interaction of genotypes and phenotypes. The data archived by dbGaP include individual level molecular and phenotype data, analysis results, medical images, general information about the study, and documents that contextualize phenotypic variables, such as research protocols and questionnaires. Comprising more than 1300 distinct research studies funded by the NIH and other agencies worldwide, and more than 2.1 million study participants, the dbGaP provides unprecedented access to very large genetic and phenotypic datasets. Through controlled access, approved researchers from across the globe may obtain access to statistical analyses, images, individual phenotype and molecular measures. At the end of this session, participants should:• Understand the current data content available via the dbGaP archive;• Become familiar with the process for submitting genotype ...
