Transesophageal Echocardiography-Guided Tumor/Thrombus Debulking Using the AngioVac Transcatheter Aspiration Device

THE AngioVac device (AngioDynamics, Vortex Medical Inc, New York, NY) is designed for transcatheter thrombectomy where blood and thrombus material are directly aspirated and then passed through a filter within a veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) system and returned to the body. Initially approved in 2009 for the removal of fresh thrombus, the AngioVac device has subsequently been used to remove infected casts off pacemaker leads, endocarditis vegetations from the tricuspid valve, and thrombus from the inferior vena cava (IVC), superior vena cava (SVC), the right atrium, and even from the pulmonary arteries.
