We present a case of Candida tropicalis thyroiditis in an adolescent male with acute lymphocytic leukemia that led to disseminated candidiasis, thyroid storm and eventual total thyroidectomy for source control.

The crude extracts showed strong antimicrobial activity against human pathogens. Biologically active compounds were isolated and purified by chromatographic methods. The structures of the pure compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic methods. They were identified as Violaceol I and Violaceol II. These compounds...

Methotrexate (MTX), an essential component in ALL treatment, has been reported to be related to neurologic sequelae and to increased oxidative stress through its interactions with enzymes in the folate pathway. Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) is the main endogenous inhibitor of nitric ox...

Authors: Kay MD, Morris-Wiseman LF, Beazer A, Winegar BA, Kuo PH Abstract A 56-year old male received a total thyroidectomy, bilateral central and right lateral neck dissection for papillary thyroid carcinoma with lymph nodes metastases. Prior to radioiodine ablation the pre-therapy 123I scan established the diagnosis of primary nasolacrimal duct obstruction (dacryostenosis). PMID: 31604890 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

DonskeyChlorine-based disinfectants are commonly used in rooms of patients with Candida auris, but there is uncertainty regarding optimal concentrations that provide efficacy while minimizing the potential for adverse effects. We found that 2 chlorine-based disinfectants were effective against C auris with 1 minute of contact time at concentrations of 4,000 parts per million or higher. Lower concentrations were effective only with increased contact time...

CONCLUSIONS: MiR-218 exerted anti-tumor functions in LA partially via the regulation of BMI-1, suggesting that BMI-1/miR-218 axis may provide a novel insight into tumorigenesis and the basis for the development of miRNA-targeting therapies against LA. PMID: 31599423 [PubMed - in process]

In this study, we aimed to determine if simultaneous inhibition of BCR-ABL1 oncogenic tyrosine kinase and PAK1/2 serine/threonine kinase exert better anti-CML effect than that of individual treatments. PAK1 was inhibited by small-molecule inhibitor IPA-3 (p21-activated kinase inhibitor III), PAK2 was downregulated by specific short hairpin RNA (shRNA), and BCR-ABL1 tyrosine kinase was inhibited by imatinib (IM). The studies were conducted by using (i) primary CML-CP stem/early progenitor cells and normal hematopoietic counterparts isolated from the bone marrow of newly diagnosed patients with CML-CP and from healthy donors...

We describe the repair processes that follow removal of TOP2 adducts and the resultant broken DNA ends, and present how these processes can contribute to disease-associated mutations. Furthermore, we examine the involvement of TOP2-induced breaks in the formation of oncogenic translocations of leukemia and papillary thyroid cancer, as well as the role of TOP2 and proteins which repair TOP2 adducts in other diseases. The participation of TOP2 in generating persistent DNA breaks and leading to diseases such as cancer, could have an impact on disease treatment and prevention.
