Enhanced Recovery After Surgery Protocols May Help Reduce Racial and Socioeconomic Disparities in Cardiac Surgery

WE READ with great interest the recent article by Zaouter et al. regarding the introduction of an enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocol for minimally invasive aortic valve replacements.1 This prospective study found that ERAS implementation was associated with a significantly reduced median postoperative length of stay (LOS) and with trends toward decreased opioid requirements and clinical complications. We congratulate the authors on their article, which adds to a robust body of literature linking ERAS to decreased morbidity, mortality, and health care costs in cardiac2,3 and other surgical specialties.
